THE DUCKHAWK FLIES AGAIN
It seems that this year of 2004 is starting out to be an exciting year for Eastern Air Lines. As everyone knows the Martin 404 was a giant stepping stone in aviation history and for many years the aircraft served Eastern Air Lines in it's climb to greatness. But also the Martin 404 served many other airlines, companies, and celebrities during it's long life span. Surprisingly today there are about 12 Martin 404 aircraft that still exist and out of those 12 aircraft 6 are ex-Eastern. As many of you know and have seen our Martin 404 registration # N450A serial # 14141 was delivered to EAL on 01/17/52 and served EAL until 12/20/62. Aircraft N450A is owned and operated by the Mid Atlantic Air Museum and based at Reading, Pennsylvania.
On 11/13/52 EAL took delivery of Martin 404 registration # N487A serial # 14235 and it served EAL until 12/31/62. It then went through several owners over the years until it was sold to Mr. Sam Stewart on 05/02/79. In 1997 Restoration was started and by 1999 the aircraft had been restored to US Coast Guard design. In early February 2004 N487A was purchased by the group that is restoring the original Hobbie Field Terminal in Texas. N487A will be ferried from California to Galvston, Texas by the son of former EAL Captain Whitesell during the week of February 9th, 2004. At this time the aircraft will be stripped of it's US Coast Guard colors and will be restored to it's original all silver "SilverFalcon" delivery paint scheme with full authorization from Eastern Air Lines and reregistered back to it's original Eastern tail number N487A. This will now be the fourth ex-Eastern aircraft to again wear the proud Eastern Logo and Name.
This is just another big step in letting the world know that Eastern Air Lines may be down, but they will never be able to eliminate the name of Eastern Air Lines and the proudest Airline Family to ever serve the public. STAY TUNED FOR MORE EXCITING NEWS VERY SHORTLY. |
