My best advice is to first find a responsible breeder ( please read the "How to buy a puppy" page ), develop a relationship with him/her, and let your breeder help you find the RIGHT puppy for you.
After all, the breeder lives with these puppies, and is able to observe them for many, many hours. The breeder is in the best position to know if a puppy has the qualities and personality you are looking for in your new companion.
MALE OR FEMALE PUPPY FOR YOU ?
You would be surprised at the number of people who are convinced that:
Females are " sweet, gentle, affectionate, easily trained "
Males are " aggressive, wander, lift their legs on on the furniture ".
Nothing could be FURTHER from the truth. The truth is that each puppy has it's own personality regardless of gender. How do I know ? Well, aside from having lived with Maltese for many years, the reason is obvious.
Look, do you know some men and some women ?
Are all the men football players ?
Are all the women wonderful cooks ?
Of course not !
Actually, many of the great chefs of the world are men !!
And the female puppy that pees on your carpet leaves just as big a mess as a male !
So, what difference does it make whether you get a male or a female ? None, especially if you expect that simply getting one or the other will guarantee disposition, personality or trainability. It WON"T.
