Literary Leaflets of Life

The deep red cones of the sumach
And the woodbine's crimson sprays
have bannered the common roadside
for the pageant of passing days.

Sumac: a tough but little-and-lovely tree for all seasons! Several varieties of Sumac grow wild over much of the country, often in thickets. These spunky little trees are just as happy growing in a ditch or on a highway slope as they would be in the front yard of a mansion. However, an online search shows that some nurseries do sell different types of sumac for various types of landscaping projects.

Sumac probably was named after the Old French word 'summaq,' which according to my dictionary, likely originated from the Aramaic red. A soliloquy is defined as a literary form of thinking and talking to yourself in solitude. To 'soliloquize' is to utter or deliver a soliloquy. (And of course, soliloquies often end up in print. For more information about that, see the introduction to my second soliloquies edition, Soliloquies 2002 )

An online ramble indicates that the humble sumac often inspires writers to whimsically muse about nature, life, and this-and-that. However, I may be first (or among the first) to choose 'summaq' as a title because so many others beat me to sumac.

Please stroll with me in my first online soliloquy.
