MY RED DRESS

MY RED DRESS
1.
The very last words, that my mother said,
I heard quite clearly, from her bed.
Three little words, and then she was dead.
"My Red Dress," is what mother said.
2.
Mom had chosen, with her last words,
and I was the one, distinctly heard.
She chose how, to be laid to rest,
and mom chose, her very best dress.
3.
Her red dress, was a gift from dad,
gifts as a child, she'd never had.
Always, wearing, hand me downs,
when an old dress, could be found.
4.
To live one's childhood, and one's youth, and never have, a dress that's new,
It brings a yearning, that's the truth,
of wanting something, just for you.
5.
Red is, as cheery, as cheery can be,
a joy for others, and oneself to see.
But, it also made my mother smile,
to be dressed up, in such rosy style.
6.
And so I did, what my mother said,
I dressed my mom, in her cheery red.
A classy lady, dressed so fine,
lovely, and more, this mom of mine.
7.
That's how my mom, chose to leave me,
How could I grieve, one dressed so cheery?
And so, at the end, with tears in my eyes,
to my angel in red, I said goodbye.
8.
She was my mom, I could do no less
Mom looked at peace, she looked at rest.
And dressed in her reddest, boldest best,
mom was dressed to be, God's long term guest.
9.
When she got to Heaven,
dressed in her best,
I'm sure God stared
at his joy filled guest.
Not only God,
but all of the rest,
'cause mom really had
that kind of dress.
10.
Last night I had a happy dream
At least a dream is what it seemed
Mom was wearing shoes, red as a rose
and she thanked me for including those.
11.
'Cause when she had, the firstest chance,
mom asked God, if He liked to dance.
God said He'd try, though it had been a while.
I really think God, liked, my mother's style.
12.
I know mom will have, many a chance,
to talk to angels, sing, and dance.
So many joys, for mom to choose,
stepping with God, in her bright red shoes.
13.
And after the dance, God made mom glad,
because suddenly, there was my dad.
Dad kissed my mom, then face to face
they danced away in starry space.
14.
And when at last, I am leaving earth,
ready for my own, eternal birth,
there'll be a helper, beside my bed,
it will be an angel dressed in red.
15.
And how could leaving
ever be sad?
when I'm going to dance
with mom and dad?

(repeat last four lines, slowly)
