Biography


One of the leading native-born residents of Ridgeville township, of which he is a trustee, first saw the light of day in 1848.

His father , John Mathias Myers 1819 was a native of Coblenz, Prussia where he was married to Miss Mary DEHN , of the same place, and they set sail from Antwerp for the United States. After a voyage of seventy-two days they landed in New York, and thence proceeded to Lorain County, Ohio locating in Ridgeville township in 1847, the place being at that time wild woodlands. Here they opened up a farm of 6 acres, clearing and improving it until it became one of the best in the county. John Mathias MYERS and Mary DEHN had a family of 9 children:

3 Phillip, a carpenter of Elyria .
4 Emma, wife of M. Pitts Jr. residing in Ridgeville township.
5 Joseph also in Ridgeville .
6 Margaret "Maggie" , wife of Joseph Blazer of Dover, Ohio
7 Adam, who died at the age of sixteen, from kick of a horse.
8 Clara, died at 3 years old.
9 Baby died in infancy.
Father was called from earth in March 1893, the Mother still living

The subject of this sketch was educated in the schools of French Creek. Ohio , and at the age of thirteen commenced working by the month, since when he has continued in agricultural pursuits, successfully conducting the homestead farm, which has been added to till now it comprises fifty three acres.

In 1874 he married , in Elyria, Lorain County, Miss Mary Barres a native of Germany who was daughter of Adam and Mary ( Jacobs ) Barres. About the year 1858 the BARRES family immigrated to America, settling in Ridgewood township, Lorain County, Ohio.

Mr. & Mrs. Myers
are members of the Roman Catholic Church at Ridgeville, of which he is Treasurer. Politicaally he is a Democrat and is now serving in a Republican township his second term as trustee of same.
