A NOTE REGARDING MY SOURCES FOR LATE ANTIQUITY AND THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD:

The best sources for studying history are the writers of that day. Primary sources can be hard to come by and one must distill them with a critical eye, knowing that all writings are reflections of the writer and their times. Many of the primary source writers, like today's journalists and historians, color their writings with their own views. This is to be expected.
