| Andre vs Chuck Wepner |

An interesting publicity photo of Boxer Chuck Wepner comparing fist with Andre 'The Giant'
Al Braverman: "Chuck is the kind of guy that would probably fight a gorilla or a kangaroo. It wouldn't make any difference to Chuck. He was of the style of, uh, Tony Galento, who was known to fight a bear. Chuck always wanted to know the bottom line. "Is the money right, Al". That's all he'd ask. And the money was right for the fight. That's why we accepted it. And I knew Chuck Wepner could handle himself in most any situation. The only thing Chuck use to be scared of was his wife. That's all".
Al Braverman: "Chuck was 6' 6" or 6' 6½". He looked like a baby, dwarfed along side...he looked like a pygmy. It was unreal. I couldn't believe that Chuck, who looked so huge looked like a little baby"
Andre kept going for the mid section.
Chuck would throw illegal rabbit punches to the back of Andre's head and kidney's. The ref must have been a wrestling referee because he allowed Wepner to get away with it over and over
|
Al Braverman: "Well after sparring a good round, Chuck hits this guy a terrific jab, a jolt, right on the snozz, full face. I seen "The Giant", he just went, "umph". (chuckles) I seen Chuck's face change a little bit. This was something wrong". |
|
Host: "Without his normal script, Andre The Giant just went after Wepner. Seriously. Serious mistake for Wepner." |
In the 3rd round, Andre, tired of Wepners rabbit punches, delivers a legit head butt to Wepner
Al Braverman: "Then he picked up Chuck and he tossed him up and over the ropes, down on the floor"
Al Braverman: "No sooner he did that, Paddy and I, we ran around to get Chuck and as I go around to get him there's some kind of other monster. Not as big as him, but another guy, Gorilla Monsoon was out there holding Paddy and I down, not allowing us to get Chuck in the ring. It was murder. You couldn't move these guys. It was all a big big big big hullabaloo"
Wepner got back in the ring and went at it with Andre again, catching him with a terrific right that actually stunned the Giant for a moment. Two seconds later, Andre had a hold of Chuck again as the two were being seperated by their handlers
