There are three basic nutrients, usually represented in chemical fertilizers as 10/10/10 or 5/10/10 or similar combinations; click on each of the nutrients to learn more about these elements: Tomatoes also need other nutrients as well, click on each element; to learn more facts: You can achieve your nutrient needs by plastering your garden with cancer causing, soil damaging chemicals or you can use organic materials, that are safe and also build the soil. This page addresses many forms of organic fertilizers and their % values of the selected nutrient. Too much nitrogen and your plants will be tall and leafy with little fruit. Too little nitrogen and your plants will be small and yellow. The table below represents organic sources of nitrogen, but may also contain other nutrients/elements as well. I've included cow manure, even though it's not particularly high in nitrogen; but because it's readily available and most people tend to use it on their gardens in the fall of the year.
Phosphorus is essential for healthy roots, bloom production, more fruit and disease resistance. Plant leaves will typically have a purple tint on their underside, when lacking phosphorus. The below table represents organic sources of phosphorus, but may also contain other nutrients/elements as well.
Potassium [Potash] is for plant health and disease resistance. A lack of potassium makes for small plants and poor fruit yields. Plants will also contain yellow spotted leaves. The table below represents organic sources containing potassium, but may also contain other nutrients/elements as well.
