Ravenna City Park

Mr Fulweber also was one of the initial members of the Ravenna Park Board and played an important part in the development of Ravenna City Park.

Now for the rest of the story--

Ravenna Historical Society wanted to restore the abandoned Hotchkiss House built on the property which is now Ravenna City Park. For years money was the problem until--

One day this writer and my two brothers and three sisters were "exploring" the beautiful , ornate 3 story stone house.

Well, our youngest brother Robert C. Fulweber fell thru a ( 2 foot square ) 1st floor vent into the cellar on top of a pile of rubble.

That was it. Discussions with the Ravenna Historical Society promptly ended.

One Saturday morning, 2 fire engines stood by with a bulldozer and 2 kegs of beer.

Firemen lit the torches and by noon the bulldozer was pushing smoldering remains of the Hotchkiss house into the basement .

The Hotchkiss House can be seen in the background behind the trees in this photo. [ Photo ] pg. _515_

The stone from this quarry was used to build much of the early City of Ravenna .

The stone quarry was also used every Winter for ice skating - after dad cut a hole in the ice and pronounced it was safe to skate.
Many a cold Ohio winter evening was spent at the quary warmed by the cherry red glow of a 55 gal drum inside the pole shed at edge of the quarry.

The City has since filled in the quarry.

The current city water tower is approx 100' to the South of where the Hotchkiss House once stood.
