In an effort to bring peace to courts of Faery, Prince Essus agreed to a 3 year marriage to Princess Besaba of the Seelie Court. To their surprise, they had Merry early on in the marrage. After the 3 years, they seem to of went back to their own courts.
Essus eventually gained custody of Merry and took her to live out among the Humans from age 6-16, to keep her safe from people in his court who thought of Merry as worthless and not fit to live, as she is mortal and not a powerful Sidhe. His Hands of Power- Hand of Flesh: ability to turn any living being inside out and that person, if one of the immortals, would still be alive. Hand of Flame: not really metioned in the books, thought to be able to light someone or something on fire magically. He was once worshiped as a god of fertility (growth of crops), and had blood rituals made to him. Quote: "Even if Merry never takes the throne she will be more queen then Cel will ever be a king." Essus was murdered when Merry was around 17 or 18 years old. |

Gran is Merry's beloved Grandmother. When Merry's Father took her to live in exile when she was a child, he invited Gran along. For those 10 years, Gran helped Essus raise Merry.
When Merry left the court 3 years previous, so did Gran. She divorced her abusive Husband, Uar, and opened a business. She calls it "BROWNIE'S BED AND BREAKFAST", where you can be waited on and cooked for by an ex-member of the Courts. Like all Brownie's, she has very little magic, save levation of objects. They are most interested in the care of the hearth and home, especially of a favored human family. |

Besaba, who is part Human and part Brownie, looks Human, while her daughter Merry has the beauty of the Faeries.
Because of this, her jealousy towards her daugther and Besaba's lack of kindness and care of Merry, has driven them apart. Merry was living in the Seelie court with her Mother, when, at the age of 6, Merry had asked the King of the court, Taranis, her Uncle, about a Fey who no longer lived among them. His answer to her was to beat her almost to death, as her Mother stood by and watched and did nothing. Besaba's own Mother, Gran as she is known, saved Merry. Soon after, Merry went to live with her Father. It is unknown if Besaba has any hands of power or any magic at all. Although beautiful in Human terms, her cold hearted manor and lack of interest in her Daughter does not endear her to many. |
