JOSHUA LISTENS
It is noisy, very noisy, in the camp.
Women are talking as they feed their families.
Men are speaking of work to be done;
The animals are being fed;
Everything is made ready to settle in for the night.
Maybe Joshua has been longing the whole day
For a quiet place with time to be with the Lord.
He walks along the Jordan River's edge -
Far from the noisy throng; water peacefully ripples along.
He surveys the other side looking from North to South,
While meditating upon the words of the law in his mouth.
Joshua's heart is quiet as he listens intently
For the voice of the Lord instructing,
Encouraging so sweetly.
God's answer to the Hebrew's impatience and unrest
Is coming quickly now, and Joshua is blessed.
The Lord goes over all that is to be done,
Reaffirming each promise one by one.
Completely humbled by the task before him,
Completely prepared by Moses in the years behind him.
Joshua quietly listens and breathes deeply,
As he sees the vision the Lord is revealing.
With the voice of his heart and humility of spirit
Joshua lifts up his eyes as he regards the heavens above.
He gazes once again across the Jordan River.
And yes, he can see it! He can see the span
Of a land already claimed lying there, waiting
For the moving of his God's mighty hand.
Breathing in strength and courage from the Lord's words,
He seizes command as God's strength undergirds.
Yes, yes they will take the land.
They will be home...home at last.
One day soon we realize,
As our hearts would burst with joy,
We, too, will cross the Jordan River
To inhabit that place prepared for us.
We breathe in deeply strength from the Lord.
We repeat in our mouths His glorious Word,
As we prepare everything here
To be laid up as treasure over there;
While daily we serve, guarded by His love and care.
Praise the Lord, Hallelujah!
For that day is coming soon.
