Please read all the scriptures for background. I have included only a short passage to focus on the calling of Solomon. The preceding events are very interesting, particularly when you find that Solomon was actually anointed twice as king.
I Kings 1:5 through 1:53
During these passages David's strength is waning. He has gathered the materials for the building of the temple knowing that Solomon would not know how to do it as quickly as he needed to do in order to begin the building of the temple as soon as they wanted to. He had prepared for his son the best he could. His family knows that it will not be long till King David will die.
Many times people presume to know who will take someone's place as a leader. Never taking into account what the Lord had ordained, David's son Adonijah prepared a great feast and declared that he would be king. He invited all of his brothers except Solomon. He also excluded Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet and David's mighty men. Nathan, the prophet went to Solomon's mother, Bathsheba, to tell her what Adonijah was doing. Bathsheba went to King David to tell him of all that Adonijah had done. King David called Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet. He instructed them to get Solomon to ride upon David's own mule and to bring him to Gihon. When they found Solomon, Zadok anointed him king at that time. This was the first anointing which made him king from that moment. It would seem that this was done immediately, so that if anything should hinder them, that Solomon would already be king and be in power Then they had him ride David's mule and brought him to Gihon as David had instructed, Solomon was again anointed king and the trumpet was blown. This was the second anointing.
When God has set aside someone to do a certain thing, lead a people, or be in charge of anything, the Lord will cause that person to take the place He intends for that person to take. Sometimes, this happens by very noticeable and strange means. It is our duty to pray for leaders in all areas of our lives whether it is in our families, our churches, our communities, states or country, whether we agree with all of them or not, for they are in their place of leadership either because God has chosen them for the job, or because, for His reasons, He is allowing them to be in power. God's ways are indeed not like our ways and His reasons many times are beyond our reasoning. We must have faith that He is on His throne and He is in control. He is greater than any being or anything in all the universe. And, He always knows best!
I Kings 2:1 through 2:4
2:1 Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon, his son, saying,
2:2 I go the way of all the earth; be thou strong, therefore, and show thyself a man.
2:3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statues, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself,
2:4 That the Lord may continue his word which he spoke concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee a man on the throne of Israel.
The Lord has guided David in all that is to pass regarding the David's throne and his successor. Here again the calling is well hidden in the years of Solomon's life in the King's house. No doubt David has rehearsed with Solomon the things the Lord has told him about the throne and who should sit upon it. What do we see in the verses that is different from any other callings we have studied? The answer is nothing. David tells his son to obey. What is the result of obedience to the Lord's commandments, laws and ways of doing things? Prosperity is the reward and result of obedience. David admonishes Solomon to obey. Why? Because that is the key to Solomon and his children and children's children succeeding to the throne. The Lord cannot keep his promises to David without the obedience of his children. What has the Lord stressed to David about this?
The Lord stressed for them to watch where they were going, to live before God in truth with all their heart and soul. The result? Inheriting what the Lord has planned for them, which for them, was the king's throne.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me.
For us today obedience and truth is the same as in Solomon's day. When we accept Jesus as our Savior and Lord, we accept Him as the way to live our lives through His many examples, we accept that He is the truth in all that He has ever said and done and without accepting Him as our Savior, we have no access to the Heavenly Father. It is the same for us to prosper and live a truly successful life. We may hot have wealth. Everything will not be perfect, but we will be where He wants us to be, doing what He wants us to do. We will live eternally as the reward, if we believe in Jesus. Then we will live truthfully before the Lord and strive to obey Him anywhere and everywhere at all times. May God grant us the strength, love, and mercy to come before Him with our lives that He may direct us in all things. May God grant that we are so close to Him that we might even hear a whispered call.
