NIGHT AND DAY NORTHERN VERMONT UFO SIGHTINGS REPORTS -- A S.P.A.C.E. EXCLUSIVE

A recent spate of UFO sightings in Vermont and New England and elsewhere of a large elongated object, seen at night and during the day is our current focus. We begin with a close encounter eyewitness report from a correspondent in northern Vermont, Kathy Nelson, who has written for the S.P.A.C.E. EXPLORER Newsetter in the 1990s and who served ten years in the U.S. Air Force and Air Reserve. We follow her own report with other reports by her of additional witnesses to UFOs in Vermont. Included is a brief rundown of recent sighting reports, from Peter Davenport's UFO Reporting Center in Seattle, of similiar UFOs in New England and in other locations, including England. There is also a photo of a daylght UFO taken in Vermont this past January.

"IN A STATE OF WONDER" - VERMONT UFO SIGHTING AWES WITNESS

By Kathy Nelson

Island Pond (Brighton), Vermont, Monday, April 11, 2005 -- Island Pond is in the Northeast Kingdom area of Vermont, 24 miles east of Newport and about 30 miles west of the New Hampshire border. The Canadian line is about 18 miles north.

I was at home tonight watching a PBS TV special about the laying of the trans-Atlantic telegraph cable. I was sitting in a chair next to a large picture window that faces directly south. The only lights on inside the house were a small night-light in the bathroom and the light from the television set.

From the corner of my eye I saw a bright light outside which emerged slowly from behind some trees on the east side of my house. The time was 9:54 p.m. The light appeared to be a cluster of bright (prismatic) white lights which was immediately trailed by a long, very dark space and then there was a small cluster of blinking reddish lights. My first impression was that the cluster of reddish lights was an airplane chasing the white lights.

I ran outside to my porch and watched this object move slowly, perhaps 100-150 mph, from east to west. The sighting was at least for a full minute. It very soon became apparent that this was not two objects but one. The white lights in the front were trailed by a long, dark space that blotted out the stars as it passed. It was a bright, clear starry night with a crescent Moon low on the northwestern horizon; the Moon was below the treeline behind the house.

The trailing cluster of blinking reddish lights followed in perfect, attached unison to the white lights and dark space, never moving closer or further away. My best estimate of the size of the object was at least 300 feet long or probably longer!

The object passed directly east to west over the southern portion of my 11 acre, heavily wooded hilltop lot. The area I live in is sparsely populated with few paved roads and no street lights. The lights of the local village of Island Pond were visible in the valley below and to the northeast of my home about four miles away; only half of the village is visible due to intervening hills.

My home sits on a hill just below the highest elevation of 1,900 feet. While I watched the object, I also noted that a train (a Canadian National, most likely) was passing on the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railway which runs through Island Pond. Such trains are fairly regular and their sounds echo powerfully through the valley. The object in the sky, however, made no sound that I could detect.

As the object was lost to my view over Meehan Hill to the west, I called a friend in East Haven (to my south) to advise him of what I had seen. I then ran back outside to he driveway to observe the sky in case the object had returned.

I observed, at 10:02 p.m., what appeared to be a commercial jet flying from the northeast in a curve taking it south-southwest. This is a standard route for aircraft over this area which frequently travel from Montreal to New York. Th jet appeared to be at least 5,000 to 10,000 feet up. The unidentified object was about 500 to 1,000 feet up. The engine sounds of this jet were clearly audible.

I then called Harold Egeln in New York City (at 10:04 p.m.) to advise him that the object was headed west and posibly could be headed for the Hudson River Valley. I spoke with Harold for several minutes and then went back outside. I stayed outside for only about 10 minutes because it was cold, at 30 degrees F, and then came back inside to write down about what I had seen.

I was excited and much delighted to have seen this wonderful sight. As the object passed, I sent to it my delighted thoughts and the wish that it would pass overhead more slowly so I could see it better. During its passage there was no interruption of electricity nor television broadcast. (I do not have either cable or satellite TV.) When I saw the object, however, it did not vary from its course and had continued its slow glide to the west.

The object appeared to be very similar to what was on a small piece of video I had seen several years ago which was taken by a resident in Brewster in Putnam County in the Hudson Valley, Bob Pozzuoli on July 24, 1984 (at 10:20 p.m.). I have this video in my archives. It was shown on NBC's "Unsolved Mysteres." The object in that video is the twin brother to what I saw, althought the object from the video shows it from underneath.

I will forward to Harold Egeln some drawings of my sighting as soon as they are completed. I'm still wound-up from the sighting and I hope I can get some sleep tonight!

I will very carefulfully check all the local and Burlington newspapers to see if anyone else here reported the object. However, I would not be surprized if I don't see anything about it, because it was cold outside and most people would have been inside sleeping or watching TV. It was with the greatest of good fortune that I spotted it myself.

Tuesday, April 12, 2005 -- It's 8:45 a.m. and I am still in a state of wonder. It was grand!

NOTE by Harold Egeln:

The unidentiied object that Kathy Nelson describes is not only "the twin brother" of the UFO taped over Brewster in 1984, but it is similar to one seen by S.P.A.C.E. Away Team witnesses, including myself, just to the south of a reservoir in Westchester County, NY, in May 1994.

Also, I noted to Kathy Nelson, that today I took a bus that went through BRIGHTON Beach here in Brooklyn, near CONEY ISLAND (a key site in the "WOW! Contact" events; I had not been through Brighton for several years, but today I did. And the village of ISLAND POND in Vermont where Nelson's sighting occured is also called BRIGHTON, as she noted!

Nelson took part in a S.P.A.C.E. Away Team night-time outing to Brewster in August 1994 and spotted a "being" emerging from an outcroping of rock near the Upper Magnetic Road stone chamber, as reported in a S.P.A.C.E. Newsletter. She has also written articles and poetry for the newsletter about experiences.

UFO Reported in Island Pond

By Christopher Roy, "Newport Daily Express" Correspondent

ISLAND POND -- An Island Pond resident, who asked to be unnamed, reports she saw an unidentified object in the night sky Monday evening.

The object was reported to be moving in an East to West direction around 9:50. The sighting lasted less than two minutes.

"It went over Hay Stack and Meehan Hills. It must have come from the area of the pond, because that is the way it came from," she said, adding, "The object then went in a so-called 'bee line direction.'"

She described the object as approximately 300 feet long and cylinder shaped.

"It had several bright white lights on the front and blinking red lights on the tail. There was a large structure between the lights and it was all one piece. It was really massive," she said.

The object was reportedly silent and was gliding about 150 miles per hour and was approximately 500 feet above the ground.

The woman said the ufo "went right by my picture window. It looked similar to something I saw on the television show in the mid-1980's, Unsolved Mysteries."

NEW VERMONT UFO SIGHTING, THIS ONE IN DAYTIME

By Kathy Nelson

Island Pond, Vermont, Friday, April 15, 2005 -- I spoke with a very respectable citizen today who wanted to tell me about a UFO he had seen just yesterday. This man lives in the town of Derby, Vermont, in the village of Derby Line. His house sits right on the border between the U.S. and Canada.

The sighting occured on Thursday, April 14, 2005 around noontime. (My sighting was three days before, on April 11 at 9:54 p.m.) The witness was outside of his home and saw an object high up in the sky which was at least several miles away.

He described this object as "hot dog"-shaped with two bright white lights on the front and two red lights on the rear with an unlighted silver-white metallic structure between the lights. He said that the object reminded him of a car driving through the sky. This object was moving from the southeast to the northwest, and then suddenly it did a rapid 180 degree turn back towards the southeast and disappeared into the clouds.

The witness stated that the object appeared to have been lost to his view over the area of West Charleston, which lis between Derby and Brighton, and it was travelling toward Island Pond/Brighton, southeast of Derby.

UFO SIGHTING BY WITNESS IN EARLY 1960s

The witness also described a UFO close encounter he had as a 12 or 13 year-old boy while living with his parents in Derby Line. (He is now about 55 years-old.) The witness stated that he, two younger cousins and and an older aunt observed a large glowing sphere which seemed to be filled with static charges like lightning which hovered low to the ground behind their house.

The object began to move slowly away toward a nearby road and cornfield. The four witnesses followed it in a car. They came parallel to this object as it floated along the top of a picket fence. The object then moved into the cornfield and the aunt refused to follow it. The witness said he would follow it on foot, but when he started to do so, the aunt and cousins became hysterical, apparently terrified that he would be harmed. So, my witness returned home with is relatives.

The following day my witness returned to the area on his bicycle and found a large, circular burn in the cornfield where the obect had been.

The witness is reliable and well-known in the area, and I find his report very credilble.

I am also trying to contact a man who lives in Derby who reported a disc-like craft hovering over Derby Pond about two and a half weeks ago, around the last week of March. Apparently this witness has had other sightings as well.

NEW APRIL 11th UFO SIGHTING REPORT

By Kathy Nelson

Vermont, Thursday, April 21, 2005 -- I received the following report of a UFO sighting late tonight. The report originates with a local female student of East Charleston here in Vermont whose home is very close to the Island Pond (Brighton) line. The resident was born in Virginia and moved to New York City to work as a performance artist for many years. She has lived in this area for about two years.

On the night of April 11, 2005 (the very same night as my sighting) this woman was working on her computer in her home. The curtains were closed. She estimated the time was a few hours before midnight (my sighting was at 9:52 p.m.).

Suddenly, she said, the roof od her house began to vibrate in a frightening manner. She heard a deep humming noise and ran outside to see what was causing it.

The woman lives in a sparsely populated wooded area accessed by a gravel road. There are no street-lights. The woman said that she saw, briefly for only seconds, an enormous object moving slowly across the sky about 500 feet aboe the ground and over the trees beside her house.

She described this object as having a flat bottom with two rows of white lights along its length (belly), and a bright white light at its nose. Flanking the two center rows of lights were rows of lights which seemed to gve this object a triangualr appearance as it was viewed from the bottom. There were two red lights very prominent on the tail (rear) of the object. (This correlates with the sighting in Derby Line on April 14.)

The witness said the object made a very deep hmming noise which she described as similiar to the sound a hummingbird makes. It was headed in a southerly directon toward Island Pond. She estimated the speed of the object as only being about five miles per hour, which gave it the appearance of almost hovering. The object disappeared over nearby trees.

After giving me this description, the witness went on to speculate that she thought this object was a military aircraft out looking for terrorsts or drug traffickers. I listened to her speculation and then had her closely exam her own description of the object. She became a little less sure that this object was military, but felt that itwas involved in the military somehow.

This woman has no military experience. I have ten years of service with the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Air Force Reservess, Most of my service experience was working on or in aircraft. What the witness reorted does not fit into current military technology....

The ocal border patrol does use small planes and helicopters to monitor areas along the US/Canadian border, but they don't do a lot of night flying. As far as I know, the border patrol does not have craft in excess of 100 feet long that can float at five m.p.h. It is illegal to fly below 1,000 feet at night, even for simple surveillience (emergency high-speed pursuits are a different matter). Aircraft and helicopter engines do not sound like "hummingbirds."

In spite of the witness's persistence that it "must have been the military," her own testimony disputes it. The fact that two other witnesses apparently saw the same type of craft (me on the same night and another witness in Derby Line on the 14th) gives crediblity to the unusual natre of the craft. Please note that this Derby Line witness saw the craft in broad daylight and observed it heading towards Island Pond, where it must have veered toward the west as it passed over the pond (for which the village of Iland Pond is named), and then glided right past my house.

The witness in East Charleston had no knowledge of the witness in Derby Line and, although my sighting had been reported in a local newspaper, she did not know it was me who had reported the sighting, as my name was withheld in the article. I have only known the East Charleston witness for about a month and have not seen her very often.

I have still been trying to track down the witness of a hovering disc over Derby Pond seen near the end of March 2005, and, on April 18 I was advsed that there had been a witness from Island Pond who had recently sighted a hovering disc over Echo Pond in Charleston.I am attempting to locate the witness. I will be meeting with the East Charleston witness tomorrow to go over the details of her sighting. She tld me that she has made a drawing of what she saw and intended to make a model.

I have been advised that sightings have been reported over Lake Memphemagoo, on the Vermont-Canadian border, and that these objects have been seen heading into northern New York State.

OTHER NEW ENGLAND SIGHTING REPORTS

By Harold Egeln

New York City, April 22, 2005 -- UFOs similiar to the Vermont objects have been reported recently elsewhere in New England and in locations outside the region, including in England, according to accounts from the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) in Seattle.

The most recent was, in fact, on Thursday, April 14 at 8:30 p.m. in East Greenwich, Rhode Island when a driver reported a dark triangular-shaped craft with three white lights on each corner and a blinking reddish strobe in the center of the craft. It was moving about 30 m.p.h., according to the witness, who also saw two police officers pull over to apparently watch the object.

In Hopkinton, New Hampshire on Thursday, March 31 at 9:30 p.m., a driver and her son saw a big black triangular-shaped object with three white lights, some 1,000 to 1,500 feet up. It was a few hundred feet long, hovered for awhile and then slowly moved away.

In Milton, Massachusetts on Wednesday, March 31 at 3:00 p.m., two people saw a mysterious cigar-shaped craft moving fast and then slowed down. After three minutes it zoomed off north towards Boston.

Elsewhere in the United States: On Sunday, April 17 at 11:30 p.m. in Phoenix, Arizona, a witness, once a deputy sheriff in New Mexico, saw three large cigar-shaped UFOs with blue-yellow illuminators which hovered and then departed at great speed. The witness reported immediate physical effects: a headache, nausea and vomiting and circular red marks on his back. In Eagan, Minnesota on Friday, April 15 a witness reported a silent boomerang-shaped object.

In Cambridge, England, on Sunday, April 17 four witnesses, including an ex-RAF officer, watched "a classic cigar-shaped" object manuveur. When the former RAF officer tried to take a picture, the object veered away. It was 200 to 250-feet long in size, with a smooth dark metallic surface. It was traveling at 30 to 50 knots at an altitude of about 1,500 to 2,000- feet up. It was silent, with no visible markings.

Further details of these sightings and others can be found on the first two links below, thanks to NUFORC and George Filer's Skywatch.

There is also a link to a blog with a photo of a possible UFO, elongated in shape and dark, taken in the daytime, with a report on the sighting which took place in Vermont this past January.

[CEN Note, April 24 -- Today Kathy Nelson informed us that not only did the Cambridge, England UFO resemble the UFO that she saw six days before, but that she, while in the U.S. Air Force, was stationed at the RAF Alcobury base in Cambridge for three years, leaving shortly before the famous Bentwaters UFO sightings in late December 1980. "Bentwaters was only the tip of the iceberg," Nelson said.]
