Joe Moore/DTA

DTA drummer Joe Moore!

New Jersey`s DTA are a 4 piece Thrash/Speed Metal outfit that have been terrorizing the Garden State area for several years. Their brand of musical mayhem is trend-free, thank you very much, with high speed riffs, punishing time changes as well as memorable tunes that stick in yer head like an icepick! And it all adds up to Mosh Pit Heaven for those faithful followers who aren`t seduced by all those Nu Metal mongrels currently gasping their last! I`ve been in touch with DTA drummer Joe Moore for a few years now [from the time when they were known as Anartik], as well as having reviewed their first demo. With their latest demo, "No Rest In Peace" now out, this seemed like a good time to fire off a few questions Joe`s way, and he fired `em right back! Great stuff, so read on......

West Side Dave: Let's have a little background; when/how did DTA come together?

Joe: The name DTA came to life about 2 years ago. We were under the name Anartik before that. The band (the core members) has been together for 7 years. We went through some line up changes through that time period but the core held together. That line up is/was Dan Noble-vocals, Jay Swinson- guitar, Randy Rodreguiz- lead guitar, Kris Kramer-Bass, and Joe Moore drums. Randy departed just before the recording sessions for "No Rest In Peace".

WSD: Tell us about the newest recording, "No Rest In Peace".

Joe: No Rest In Peace is our current 4 song EP. After recording our first 7-song self titled demo, the bands line up stayed tight enough to continue writing together. No Rest took a little longer to put together because the band has started maturing through the writing process. We wanted to convey our ideas clearly, so we spent more time writing. As I stated earlier, we lost Randy just before we started recording. Jay had a huge job on guitars and preformed excellently. The rest of us are very confident in our work. Our engineer CJ Scioscia filled in on the lead guitar slot. All in all, we feel that No Rest In Peace represents us well.

WSD: How would you describe your style?

Joe: As far as genres are concerned, we are a metal band. Most people consider us a thrash metal band. I feel that our style encompass more than just thrash. We are influenced by older bands like Death, Kreator, Overkill, and some new bands like Callenish Circle Amon Amarth. The result is pretty original. People always tell us we sound a little like someone, but can't really pin us to any one specific band, so I guess we're doing something right. (Laughs)

WSD: What do you think sets the band apart from "the others"?

Joe: If people feel that we're doing something that sets us apart from other bands that's cool but, we don't feel that way. Each musician will play a riff that sounds similar to another. I think that it lies in the creativity of that musician to put his or her interpretation into it.

WSD: When did you start playing drums, and who were some of your early influences?

Joe: I started playing the drums around 1980. (for the people that were born after that, I would like to state that I don't walk with a cane, and I can see over my steering wheel). At that time metal was in its pioneering stages. Ventor from Kreator was a big influence for me as was Dave Lombardo from Slayer. The standards were set by guys like Neil Pert, John Bonham, so I guess they had part in it too.

WSD: What kind of drums are you currently using?

Joe: I'm currently playing a 1990 Pearl BLX in Piano black. It's a 12 pc. birch monster with 24 inch kick drums, 6 mounted toms, and 2 floor toms. I have all Sabian cymbals including a 24 inch AA Metal X ride.

WSD: What made you want to play Metal?

Joe: Aggression! Speed! I was really drawn to the speed of songs like Chemical Warfare , and Pleasure to Kill. I was also drawn to it because it wasn't trendy. I was into it as soon as I heard it, and I've never looked back.
