We will remember them." WELCOME TO THE 50th FIGHTER GROUP AND HER SQUADRONS! The 50th Fighter Group's history spans five decades, from 1940 to 1991; from World War II to the end of the 'Cold War' and the closing of USAFE's second largest nuclear air base, Hahn Air Force Base, West Germany. It's a history rich in battle honors and firsts... earned during WW II, the Cold War, and Desert Storm. During World War II, it was first known as the "School Masters" Group, and was the first to train pilots for 'night fighters!' Once, in Europe, they were called, the "Sky Masters," and after D-Day, was the third fighter group to move from England to Normandy. 1953, it was the first Air Force Wing ever, to deployed at one time from the United States to Europe. And the 50th Fighter Squadrons: the 10th, 81st and 313th Tactical, the 417th Fighter Bomber, the 496th Interceptor.. were the first squadrons to fly a 'Wild Weasel Mission' in Europe and in 1955 they earned USAFE's top spot, the 'Straight Shooters!' They also took first place in 1961 for USAFE's Lodeo Competition and again in 1962 and 1963, for three years in a row; and became the "Masters Of The Sky!" And maintained being #1 throughout the seventies and eighties, up to when the base closed in 1991.
