ASTARSA acted as sub-contractor for General Motors Inter-America Corp. Astarsa's main line of business was shipbuilding. Prior to involvement with GM, Astarsa also acted as subcontractor for Werkspoor and Alsthom (1966 thru 1971), in addition to doing major repairs to diesel (and steam!) locomotives for the Argentinian State Railways. Company shut down 1994, abandoning some locomotives (new and under repair) on the shop floor. Eventually company declared bankrupcy in 1997 and went out of business. Plant is in process of being sold (2000).
