ASTILLEROS ARGENTINOS RIO DE LA PLATA SA (ASTARSA)

ASTARSA acted as sub-contractor for
General Motors Inter-America Corp. Astarsa's main line of business was shipbuilding. Prior to involvement with GM, Astarsa also acted as subcontractor for Werkspoor and Alsthom (1966 thru 1971), in addition to doing major repairs to diesel (and steam!) locomotives for the Argentinian State Railways. Company shut down 1994, abandoning some locomotives (new and under repair) on the shop floor. Eventually company declared bankrupcy in 1997 and went out of business. Plant is in process of being sold (2000).

Following system was used for numbering locos after 1958: (Former railroad names were painted on locos until 1968, then all relettered to "Ferrocarriles Argentinos")

1st digit - horsepower:

5 - 601 to 1000 hp
6 - 1001 to 1400 hp
7 - 1401 to 1600 hp
8 - 1601 to 2000 hp
9 - 2001 and up hp
10 - 600 and down hp (causes 5-digit road #)

2nd digit - assignment by former railroad

001-200 - FC General Roca
201-400 - FC General Mitre
401-550 - FC General San Martin
551-700 - FC General Sarmiento
701-930 - FC General Belgrano
931-999 - FC General Urquiza

3rd and 4th digit - individual unit number in series

Example - 5559 = 601-1000hp (GA8W), on Sarmiento Ry, 9th loco of type

In 1991, numbering system for locos in Buenos Aires suburban service was changed to an Alphabetical designation for operator, then the number designating horsepower, then a two-digit unit number. Alpha codes assigned were:

A - Roca (now Metropolitano Roca)
B - San Martin (now Metropolitano San Martin)
C - Sarmiento (now TBA Sarmiento)
D - Mitre (now TBA Mitre)
E - Belgrano (Now Ferrovias SAC - Sector North)
F - Belgrano (Now Metropolitano Belgrano - Sector South)
G - Uruquiza (now Metrovias)

Please note - only locomotives in Buenos Aires suburban service have been renumbered. All others still carry four-digit numbers.
