This page has been created to fill a major void in available data - that of the accurate history of modern urban heavy and light rail systems that have been proliferating in the United States and Canada since WW2, and particularly since the opening of the San Diego Trolley in 1981. What I have done is put together a chronological order of service changes for each system, drawn from notes in George Smerk's "Traction Currents" column, the New York Division ERA Bulletin, various transit authorities' web pages and system maps, and myriad other sources. Each system is described starting with initial service date, showing stations opened that day in BOLD FACE. Station names are as shown on transit map of that system, except where station signage is known to differ, where name as on station signage is used. Later additions follow the same pattern, with new stations shown in BOLD FACE. Hours of service are to be assumed as day and evenngs (about 5AM to Midnight) 7 days a week, unless stated otherwise. |
