A House at Auvers

Arnold Smith
January 2004
Oil on linen
100 x 50 cm.
40 x 20 in.

In this painting, I tried to paint the sky as dark and filled with melancholy as I could, using almost pure black in places. At first, I was worried this might give the painting a depressing feel. It's the man in the lower left, unconcerned with the weather, carrying his shovel and smoking his pipe that makes this a positive painting.

It was done from a drawing Vincent did in May/June, 1890.
