STAR TREK ON DVD

Paramount Home Video has finally released the first six Star Trk movies on DVD in Special Editions, and a great job they have done!!

Over the course of a year, they released Trek 1-6 every other month, beginning with a wonderfully remastered version of STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE, the most underrated of all, Directed by Robert(West Side Story)Wise.

Able through digital CGI to finish effects never done in 1979, Wise wisely reedited the film, making it tighter, redid sound effects(laying in original sound effects from the series) and including deleted scenes. Some scenes done for the ABC tv version were dropped, like the beginnng of Kirks space walk, but are all in a extensive deleted scene section.

Star Treks 2-4 also get the deluxe treatment, but with virtually no revisions(some minor cuts included in 2)

Star Trek 5, another reviled film, comes out better on DVD, including an extensive deleted scene file with the ROCK MAN SEQUENCE. A victim of budget cutting, the film was hampered by effects problems and interference by the front office.

Star Trek 6, maybe the best of the series is again directed by Nicholas Meyer.Includes deleted scenes and a tribute to De Forest Kelley.

All in all, a worthy addition to your DVD Collection.

Tom's psychotic world of giant lizards and secret agents(or SCHLOCK VIDEO WORLD!!!!!!!)

DIE ANOTHER DAY

Directed by Lee Tamahori
Produced by Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccolli

Bond is Back! Better than ever, even this Austin Powers and XXX world. Pierce Brosnan in the latest, maybe greatest Bond film teams up with
Halle Berry, Oscar winner for Monster's Ball, in this hi octane adventure. Starting in North Korea, recently in the news as part of the"Evil Axis', Bond gets hmself captured and the movie takes an unexpected turn--making Bond a victim. But not for long. Traded for another North korean terrorist, Bond stripped of his OO standing goes renegade, travels to Cuba and hooks up with Halle Berry, one of the hottest BondBabes ever.

Add to the mix Rick Yune and Toby Stephens as baddies, this Bond has it all. One of the best of the series, Brosnan has succeeeded in taking over Connery's mantle. The only sore point is Madonna's lousy title song and her cameo, pointless except for her ego. She is not aging well.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2

I finally got to see this summer's highly hyped only blockbuster--and was pleasantly surprised.
While the film has absolutely nothing to do with the original series(and more to do with Bond) I thought this collaboration between JOHN WOO
Tom Cruise, and writer ROBERT TOWNE (CHINATOWN) was highly amusing, if often illogical.
Lead actress Thandie Newton was gorgeous as Tom Cruise's paramour and one point she asked him his name,I fully expected him to say BOND, JAMES BOND.
The film is loaded with riffs from Bond, particularly
from GOLDENEYE, and I had no idea that Cruise could be a minor league Bruce Lee.
The film is fun, and I can't wait for the DVD.
Hopefully Paramount will lower the price of the
MISSION 1 DVD .

FILM REVIEW

X-MEN
Directed by Bryan Singer
Starring Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen,Halli Berry, Famke Jannsen,Hugh Jackman,Rebecca Rominj Stamos, Anna Paquin.

Yes folks, the long awaited film version of Stan Lee/Jack Kirby/Chris Claremont/Dave Cockrum's comic book is now on the screen. While it was highly anticipated, I had some doubts. Marvel had not a great track record for adapting their characters (The Punisher/Capatin America)

After seeing the film, my fears were unfounded.

X Men is the best comic book film since the original BATMAN and SUPERMAN THE MOVIE.

They did a nice job in casting, particularly Patrick Stewart as Prof.X and HughJackman as Wolverine who steals the film.
Naturally Ian Mckellen is top notch as usualin the role of Magneto, and is the perfect match for Stewart.

Famke Jannsen one of the best recent Bond women is also Xcellent as Jean Grey, looking a bit like Marylou Henner.

Can't wait for the followup.

SHORT TAKES--
END OF DAYS special edition
CONAN THE BARBARIAN special edition
These two latest releases from Universal Home video are both superior picture and sound.
Although CONAN is 2 channel mono---wasn't it Dolby stereo in the theatres?
BOth edition are in widescreen, and Conan is particularly good if for the hilariously funny audio commentary by Arnold and director Milius--even tho it sounded like they were both hitting the demon rum while making the comments.
My only qualm is that I could not find the theatrical trailers anywhere even tho they are listed on the box.

MORE DVDS----

Yes, the Bond films are back--on Special Edition DVDS from MGM/UA. Each remastered film comes with an ample supply of extras including behind the scenes footage, trailers interviews and more.
I will be reviewing the films in order of original release----
DR.NO
list $34.95
MGM/UA
The first James Bond film is still one of the most interesting, and still has a visceral quality about it.
The film is presented in widescreen Dolby mono sound. The picture quality has not looked this good since the original presentation in theatres.

The extras are truly worth the price of admission--
the audio commentary include comments by the late Terence Young and designer Ken Adam.who admits that the set budget for the film was $40,000(amazing how great the film looks)

The making of documentary also has comments by Ursula Andress and others and is fascinating.

Rounding out the volume are trailers and a photo gallery.

FILM REVIEW

GODZILLA 2000
Directed by Takao Okawara

After the disasterous GODZILLA by the ID4 crew two years ago tanked everywhere, Toho decided to try it again with a revamped Godzilla. With improved EFX, but still a man in suit--GODZILLA 2000 is lots of fun--and the fiirst US theatrical release to sport the actual TOHO logo.
It's great to have the real Big G back.

DVD REVIEW-SUPERMAN THE MOVIE

Finally it's here--the long awaited Director's Cut of SUPERMAN THE MOVIE by Richard Donner----after years of waiting Warners bit the bullet and now we have a gorgeous restoration of the 1978 classic. Not only is the film in 2:85 but now in Dolby 5.1--

Scenes from the now legendary ABC version are included--the full Noel Neill-Kirk Alyn train scene--the Luthor's Lair trial by fire scene---and even a unseen father son talk with Superman and Jor-El after Ka rescues Lois.

Two ABC shots NOT included are Superman blocking the missle(it veers away) and Supes saving Miss Techmacher (included in deleted scenes reel)

The sound has been totally reworked--and is terriffic----

Other extras include THREE making of docus,
screen tests for Lois(check out Anne Archer)
trailers(but none for the remastered rerelease)
a selection of unused music clues, and audio commentary by Donner and Tom Mankewitz--missing---they should have had a photo and poster gallery as on the SUPERGIRL DVD!

All in all a GREAT DVD package! If you don't have a DVD player--now's the time to get one!

PS--the other Superman films. 2, 3 and 4 are NOT remastered and only have a trailer as the extra.

Since it's all but certain Warners will SE these too--I would wait---unless they show up in the dollar bins---

PPS- Warners really BLEW IT big time by not theatrically releasing the SE in April---what was the competition--SPY KIDS?

FILM REVIEW-THE MUMMY RETURNS

The Mummy Returns 2001
Directed By Stephen Sommers
Starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weitz, Arnold Vosoo, The Rock'

Follow up to the prequel THE MUMMY. THE MUMMY RETURNS has none of the style or wit of the first entry. What it does have is CGI-- a lot of it. Perhaps in the next one they can eliinate the human actors entirely!

In this sad sequel we are introduced to Fraser and Weitz young annoying blond british kid Alex. In a very Spielbergian opening the kid causes GOONIES of trouble ending in a tunnel flood(as in any number of serials)

The action moves to London where the local Roy Barcroft look alike is running a Scorpion cult in order to revive the Scorpion King (the Rock) a super-vilian from the past.

There are fights, car crashes, and some generally good action scenes in the first half, bt it goes downhill when annoying Alex gets kidnapped and the action switches to CGI land aka Egypt.

The second half is a CGI sample reel for some guys at ILM who didn't get to work on PEARL HARBOUR----the story dwindles to nothing and we are subjected to bad mummy ewoks and an even worse CGI version of THE ROCK--

The climax effects are probably the worst in CGI history--even worst than LOST IN SPACE---

Even the CGI generated temple backgrounds look fake---where are the Harrison Ellenshaws or Harryhausens or Albert Whitlocks of today?

Director Sommers did a great job on the earlier MUMMY and the even earlier JUNGLE BOOK showing an appreciation of the action films of the 40s---however THE MUMMY RETURNS is like a REPUBLIC SERIAL on CRACK----it just dosn't hold up.

Rent the video on Dollar day-----
