I purchased this unusual pipe from the pipemaker Kirk Bosi (http://home.att.net/~kirk.bosi/ - kirk.bosi@att.net). As with the Krska pipe you will see later as you progress through these pages, it was primarily all the wonderful panels which attracted me to this pipe. They are even carried through onto the shaping of the stem! Very nice indeed. Another thing that appealed to me was the vague resemblance to a bat in flight. The pipe measures 7" by 2 1/2" and the tobacco chamber is 2" deep. I haven't been able to bring myself to smoke this aesthetically appealing example of the pipemaker's art...yet. Everything I have read about Kirk Bosi's work though has me torn between smoking this or buying another of Kirk's pipes to smoke.
Here is what is given on the website as a description of all the Bosi Pipes, "Each Bosi pipe is carved from the finest hand select Grecian Plateau Briar. Paying careful attention to the wood grain, he hand shapes the tough burl blocks into individually crafted works of art in a variety of styles, from freehands to the classics. Important design features include tobacco holes cut with a custom drill bit (that he makes himself) tapered shaped to allow a better draw and thicker bowl walls to maximize cool smoking. All the pipes are coated with Carnauba Wax which allows the bowl to breathe while protecting the wood from oils and impurities, and the inside of the bowls are left natural, or if you wish I can pre-carbon the inside of the bowl." This pipe came with the bowl pre-carbonized. |

I won this beautiful pipe on eBay. The shape, contrasts, and the very complimentary stem all work together to create an aura of style and class. What a truly elegant pipe this is.
Here is what the original write-up said: "Wild Svenlar By M. Kabik - B "Almost new. Smoked very little. Clean top and stem. Nice flowing lines from shank to end of stem. Beautiful wood. 2 1/2" tall, 13/16" bore." Measuring from the bit, along the stem to the end of the shank we arrive at 5 1/8" while going from the bit to farthest away part of the rim of the bowl gives us 6 1/4". The width of the striking plateau rim measures a half inch all the way up to an impressive one inch. The nomenclature reads, "SVEN LAR, HAND MADE, BY M. Kabik, B" Michael Kabik has informed me that his grading always started with "A" as the lowest and went on up from there. Such a beautiful pipe this is and only one step up from the bottom. I think this speaks volumes on the high quality of the pipes crafted by Michael Kabik. |
