The Greenpoint Incinerator went into operation during 1958. It spewed it's toxins over the Greenpoint community for years until it was closed down on June 1, 1994 due to the tireless efforts of The Concerned Citizens of Greenpoint. This group of residents complained about the smell and the falling ash and fought for the closure of the facility. It was later determined that this incinerator was especially noxious because of it's low stacks which spewed toxins in a higher concentration.
The Department of Sanitation has already begun work on the dismantling of the Greenpoint Incinerator. Unfortunately the agency has not been forthcoming regarding environmental testing and procedures for the demolition. There is no testing being done regarding dioxin. It is not required. Dioxin is one of the most toxic substances known to man. Dioxin is just one of the toxins that the incinerator is responsible for. Dioxin lives on, in our bodies, waters and land even though the facility is shut down. Residents fear that the dioxin will find it's way back into the community with a careless cleanup. Photos were taken of the demolition workers displaying such carelessness.
Community residents are also concerned about the future use of the facility. Power plant? New Incinerator? Expanded marine transfer station? The community says NO to further noxious use of this site!!! People are still suffering from the health effects dioxin has on humans. Some effects which are probably not yet known.
