Opera: Pop singers seen as answer to money woes
...The Atlanta Opera needs some cheery news.
Big smiles are coming in the form of Harry Belafonte (scheduled for Oct.25) and Andy Williams (Dec.15 and 16).
..."We need to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to get us out of this red spot we're in.....the first in a series of annual fund -raising events...."
One of these will probably be a pricey benefit concert (Belafonte's top ticket price:$250 with dinner ),the other a holiday show (a la Williams).

Harry Belafonte has been in the news from Australia to Philadelphia...

There have been too many mentions of Harry's name since July to name all of them. But for the past 3 weeks he's been very busy:

On August 27, he was inducted in The National Black Sports and Entertainment Hall of Fame at a gala at Aaron Davis Hall in Harlem.

On August 28, he joined Martin Luther King III for a rally in Cincinnati, where they spoke to a crowd of several hundreds urging them to continue working for progress in civil rights.

That same evening he was one of the commentators in Peter Jennings's " I Have A Dream speech ,40 Years Later," on ABC,.taped earlier.

On September 3, he was in Miami for the Latin Grammy Awards, where he hosted a dinner for the Person of the Year Award, presented to Brazilian music legend Gilberto Gil. Unfortunately that part was not shown on TV!

On September 12,he attended the first world "Inter-dependance Day" at The American Philosophical Society in Philadelpia. (I'll spare you the disparaging comments of the columnist about Harry's music, who added:" I stood next to Belafonte, who is a genuinely nice man".

Next Sunday, Sept, 21," Belafonte to take part in Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk...He will be appearing as a special guest at the walk to tell his own story of surviving prostate cancer to the thousands of walkers taking part in the Patient-Family portion of the fundraising event which is presented by the Hyundai Motor Amarica". Harry will be riding in the car opening the event.

That is all for to-day, even though his name comes very frequently in the press, somewhere in the world, about his music (of the past) and his politics, (usually nasty comments.)
If somebody knows anything about concerts, please e-mail me! I cannot find anything about the Atlanta Opera benefit concert....or any other.

"There is life after detection."

Sept.23,03
Boston Globe,AP;
" The very personal issue of cancer brought Harry Belafonte to Boston for a very public appearance at the Jimmy Walker Fund. Belafonte,76, who was diagnosed with cancer 8 years ago and beat back the disease with surgery and treatment ,came to greet the walkers and talk about cancer at the Sunday's event.Thousands of people came for the walk. Belafonte said he's "living proof there is life after detection...The more of us who have some platform who can step forward to speak about it candidly, could take some of the sting out of the stigma",the singer said. ....He posed for pictures with walkers and talked with them as they crossed the finish line."
He also gave medals,as shown on a large picture of him giving a medal to a 6 years old girl, in The Boston Globe.
Many more news ...AFI Silver Theater Tribute to Jin Hanson ,on Sept.25 (I attended and will write about it later ),, Bermuda on Oct.8, Columbus,Ohio on the 11th, etc... as host and main speaker...No concert on the horizon so far!

Harry Belafonte 's name has been in numerous newspapers worldwide in October because of the appointment of 2 new Goodwill Ambassadors for UNICEF,"joining the late Audrey Hepburn,Vanessa Redgrave,Roger Moore, Harry Belafonte "

No article or musical review of the concert in Atlanta,(October 25 ), but I received the following from the Atlanta Opera. yesterday:
".....From what I understand. The Harry Belafonte show was a great success. We did not sell out the house, but ticket sales went well enough that we did make money...the audience seemed to have a wonderful time:they were very enthusiastic. Mr.Belafonte seemed to be in good form.He had promised us only an hour and a half of music, but then he proceeded to play encores for another half-hour. After a quick shower and change, he attended the gala dinner and posed for pictures with the attendees, which everyone enjoyed.I will try to send you a picture.
The only bit of news was that he is not planning to do any more concerts for a while..did not say why, though. He certainly seemed to be in excellent health, with plenty of energy.
I did not know much about Harry Belafonte before he came to do this show in Atlanta, and I have come to respect him a great deal.He is an activist as well a an artist, and he believes in doing good in the world. He is extremely articulate and intelligent and gives wonderful interviews. He is a professional in every sense and I am glad I had the chance to learn more about him.."

THANK YOU,Lindsay. I am so happy that at least one more person has found out why Harry Belafonte has such a devoted following throughout the world, and why I am trying to do a website about him.

On October 30, Harry Belafonte presented a video tribute to the late Gregory Peck at a special event in Hollywood.
