IF YOU REALLY WANT TO PADDLE, Here are some things to be aware of and do...
• Be there. Be respectful. Be ready.
• If possible - have your own paddle.
• Have all your gear ready - including your own water and snacks for the day, a dry change of clothing in water-proof bag, and an Ocean-Worthy Safety / Life jacket in the right size to fit properly.
• When they ask for pullers ... SPEAK UP and say you want to paddle.
You can also make it known to the skipper at a meeting prior to take-off that you want to be a puller, so he or she can be pre-informed of this fact.
This may not guarentee you a place on the canoe, or that you will get to paddle, but it will help the skipper, when planning for crew, to know who really wants to paddle.
• On the canoe: Listen. Keep on pace.
• No goofing off. This endangers everyone.
• Rest when you need to rest. But first let the skipper know so he or she can adjust the crew to accommodate for this. There is no shame in taking a rest when you need to (provided that you are not in the middle of rough waters or strong currents that requires everyone to pull hard).
• Listen to the skipper for instructions... for loading into the canoe, for pulling, for off-loading, etc.
• Keep the canoe in good condition. Keep it clean. Don't abuse it.
• Be thoughtful and respectful of the skipper, and of the other pullers.
• Avoid swearing or foul language. These are hurtful and offensive to the water, the canoe, the journey, the other individuals, the entire atmosphere and purpose of the journey.
• Refrain from smoking, drugs, offensive talk and behavior.
• Enjoy, and learn from the experience. Build and cherish the memories of these times, and share your stories with others.
