FULL CIRCLE YOUTH PADDLE

In 1994 Tom Heidelbaugh and Phil Red Eagle spearheaded what was to be known as the "Full Circle Youth Paddle".

These events took place for two or three weeks each summer in the waters of Puget Sound of Washington State, on the years in-beween the "Big" Paddle Journey events.

The youth, families, elders, and facilitators used this time to gather, and practice the community ideals of the canoe society experience. It was done in a relaxed way, without the strict time lines of having to be at the next stop for the next gathering at a certain day and time. There was an aire of importance but not the stress of being in a hurry.

Water Safety Instruction Required

Full Circle Youth Paddle participants were required to take a water safety course of instruction, provided as part of the Paddle Event activities.

Each Full Circle Youth Paddle Event provided many learning opportunities for all ages of participants.

Native Youth had Greater Opportunity, by Full Circle Youth Paddle Events to:

  • Experience The Culture
  • Learn Canoe Society Customs
  • Practice Traditional Protocol
  • Learn Water Safety And Cold-Water Rescue
  • Paddle In The Canoe
  • Learn Importance of Teamwork
  • Pattern after good Role Models
