NBA HEEL$ CA$HING IN

This 'financial report' takes a look at the 2008-09 salaries of the 11 former Tar Heels that have played in the NBA this season along with their current contract status and some statistical info.

* Starting at the top of the salary list with Vince Carter, of the New Jersey Nets, at $14,724,125 this season, an amount that places Carter 22nd in the NBA in annual compensation in his 11th year in the league. Vince's current contract is a 4-year deal for $60 million and runs through 2010-11, with a team option for 2011-12 for another $18 million.

* Raymond Felton is coming to the end of a four-year arrangement with the Charlotte Bobcats that will total $13,330,000 at the end of this season and over his first four years in the league. After making $4,148,715 in 2008-09, Charlotte must make Felton a Qualifying Offer of $5.5M for 2009-10 (by June 30, 2009) in order to have the right to match any offer from another team as he becomes eligible for free agency at the end of this season.

* After sitting out the current season at $5.5M with a wrist injury that required surgery, Brendan Haywood, of the Washington Wizards, has one more year to go on a 5-year, $25 million deal. The 2009-10 salary is $6M for Haywood's 9th NBA season.

* Antawn Jamison, of the Washington Wizards, is under contract for $9,923,285 for this year (his 11th). Jamison is in the first year of a 4-year contract for $50M that runs through 2011-12 and calls for payment of $15 million in that final year.

* A 2008-09 salary of $2,661,026 will bring Sean May, of the Charlotte Bobcats, to almost $7.9M after four years in the league. Charlotte needs to make a Qualifying Offer of $3.7M to May for 2009-10.

* Rashad McCants, of the Sacramento Kings, is working on a 2,620,026-dollar contract in 2008-09, his 4th season in the NBA. That will bring his earnings to nearly $7.6M, mostly paid by Minnesota. Sacramento must ponder a Qualifying Offer of $3.64M to have the right to match offers for McCants.

* A foot injury has limited Jerry Stackhouse, of the Dallas Mavericks, during 2008-09 (his 14th), the second year of a 3-year deal that totals $21M. That includes $7M this year and $7.25M in 2009-10.

* Another 14-year veteran, Rasheed Wallace, of the Detroit Pistons, is at the end of a 6-year, $60M contract run that pays him $13,680,000 in 2008-09. Wallace goes into 2009-10 as an unrestricted free agent.

* Jawad Williams had a limited NBA rookie run with the Cleveland Cavaliers (9 games through Jan. 8, 2009) that amounted to $239,111. Williams now plays in the D-League for Rio Grande Valley and is an NBA free agent.

* At the end of this season, after four years in the NBA, and a 2008-09 salary of $5,636,142, Marvin Williams, of the Atlanta Hawks, will have hauled in $18.16M after spending just one season as a Tar Heel. It will then require a Qualifying Offer of $7.36M for Atlanta to maintain the right to match offers by other clubs for Williams in 2009-10.

* Brandan Wright, of the Golden State Warriors, will make $2,497,320 in 2008-09, his second year as a pro. Wright is on a four-year pay scale through 2010-11 that has a team option at $3.4M for 2010-11 and totals almost $10.9M if that option is picked up. Next year's salary is set at $2.7M. Golden State's Qualifying Offer to match offers for 2011-12 will be $4.6M.

Salary total for 2008-09: $68,630,050

*M = Million

A couple of former Tar Heel hoopsters have been toiling in the NFL over the last seven years.

* Veteran wide receiver Ronald Curry was signed with Oakland through 2011, but became a free agent when he was released on February 20, 2009. According to the USA Today Salaries Database, Curry had a total salary in 2008 of $4,502,520 along with a signing bonus payment of $3M.

* With a base salary of $6.5M and bonus payments of $5.235M from the Carolina Panthers, star defensive end Julius Peppers was paid $11,735,000 in 2008. As a restricted free agent for 2009, Peppers has been hit with the "franchise player" tag by the Panthers. Keeping Peppers with "franchise" status in '09 will cost Carolina $16.7M. A trade to another team will most likely set Peppers up with a long-term contract and a lucrative signing bonus.
