SMOTHERS BROTHERS EPISODE GUIDE

Smothers Brothers Show (1965-66)

Somebody's already taken care of the episode guide for the 1965-66 sitcom. Take a look.

Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (1967-1969)

The variety show that, 35-plus years later, is still the topic of someone's converation. This show had everything: music (including the literally explosive appearance by The Who that, to this day, still ranks as among music's big highlights), comedy (and not just "Mom Always Liked You Best"), commentary, and, depending on whose opinion you believe, controversy. Too bad it's not available on video except in excerpts in the documentary "Smothered: The Censorship Struggles Of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour". The pieces representing the whole are excellent,...and more timely than some may realize.

[The primary source for this information is the Eastern Illinois edition of TV Guide,...which looks to be one of the areas affected by the censorship struggles--to have an enormous gap of reruns sitting between original Comedy Hour episodes and the June premiere of The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour just doesn't sound feasible. Any help to fill in the blanks would be greatly appreciated.]

Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour [Smothers Brothers Show] (1970)

Thirteen months after the last absolute airing of the CBS "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" came this version. Curiosity got people to look, but once it was noticed that this show wasn't as biting as the first the novelty died. Do take note of a person among the regulars: Sally Struthers,...who would, one season later, enchant us as Archie Bunker's "Little Girl" on "All In The Family". [Any gaps of broadcast are simply the matter of airing broadcasts of the previous variety series--a bit odd for the ABC network to be showing CBS programming.]

Tom Smothers' Organic Prime Time Space Ride (1971)

Not much is known about this third attempt at a variety series, this time featuring Tom as a regular and Dick as a "guest star" (though Dick might as well have been a regular as before since, well, you just can't spilt up these two permanently.) Being that it had a syndicated versus network run made it all the harder for this program to exist. But it's around somewhere.

Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (Smothers Brothers Show) (1975)

Tom and Dick's fourth (though not last) run with a variety series. This one was produced by Joe Hamilton, who was able to make the concurrently running "Carol Burnett Show" a hit. But what worked for Carol did not translate to the Brothers and this version was more or less a mid-season TV fling. Notable names among the regulars here: Steve Martin (stepping up from his writing duties of the 6769 series), Don Novello (AKA Father Guido Sarducci) and Betty Aberlin (more recognizable from Mr. Roger's Neighborhood)

Fitz And Bones (1981)

This series is the one and only non-variety series Tom and Dick starred in, one in which they also moderately played it straight, and as non-siblings. This also happens to be the only series running during the beginning of a writers' strike that delayed the start of the 1981-82 season. Despite this, viewers pretty much waited till the season began in full to come back to watch their favorites.

Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (1988-1989)

Once again, with feeling, with a few twists added: Tom and Dick (and a few of their old company) are back to do a little reminiscing and try again. The sparkle was there, but with this coming in bunches not a lot of momentum to make a real series run--and hardly enough to certify the return trip as a failure. It was less "Mom Always Liked You Best" (though, siblings that they are, you can't take rivalry out of them) and more a showcase for all kinds of talent: jugglers, magicians, comedians, musicians, yo-yo artists (of which we find Tom being one of these),...much like a classic vaudeville show. One of the twists thrown in was coming out of the starting gate smack in the middle of yet another writers' strike--running as the only network series playing in first-run for the second time in less than a decade (note the lack of sketch listings in the first set of air dates). But all was not lost, and two more bits of run were added, causing them to jokingly wonder aloud in talk show appearances if what they were doing was "a special series" or "a series of specials". Don't think they ever figured that one out.
