Constance's Bio;
I grew up with a feed bucket in one hand and a pitch fork in the other, Agriculture is in my blood and it should come as no surprise that I am in the college of Agricultural Sciences and majoring in Animal Sciences, science option with an Equine Science Minor. While going to school I have tried to experience all of the possible realms of employment in agriculture, and while this is a daunting task I have decided that the niche that best suits my abilities is the laboratory. However in order to be a competent and productive researcher a college education is required. Although many college students of this era are going to college because it is the norm, I have many educational goals that I intend to continue pursuing at Penn State. I plan to complete my Bachelors degree in the next two years and get a job with a research firm where I can do experimental research to improve the genetics of breeding cattle, not only to increase milk efficiency in the dairy herds but also weight gain in the beef herds. I also have an interest in small ruminants mainly with sheep and goats, I would like to continue to raise my goat herd and promote goats as an easy and cheap livestock to raise. In addition, I would like to own my own horse barn where I can train and own my horses. With all of these goals in mind the only logical choice of a major was Animal Science. Still, in today's world of agriculture farms are looking for specific solutions to very precise problems, whether it is laminitis on a dairy farm, poor yield grades on a beef farm, PSE pork on a swine operation or colic on a horse farm, these problems all require scientific analytic problem solving. This is what I want to pursue, finding solutions to these challenges that cannot be easily solved is important. A positive outcome for a single operations issue can save capital and the quality of the product can be improved. By enhancing the scientific discoveries in agriculture; nutrition can be improved and more food can be produced. Also science can be a tool that can be used to aid other countries in their agricultural pursuits; by teaching people overseas basic animal husbandry and management procedures they can begin to help themselves with the knowledge we provide through research. Research is also a pathway for science to integrate into the lives of people on a personal level. Technology that is discovered in the lab can be manipulated to meet the needs of a specific issue that is found in agriculture worldwide. Being able to make a difference in the lives of people across the globe in every nation, is my passion via working in agriculture I will be able to accomplish my goals of becoming an animal research scientist and change problems into productive solutions to better aide the human population. Therefore it should be quite clear that a career in animal agriculture is not only my future goal but also my passion. End |
