Gate Tending Operations

Very little information on gate tending has been provided to me. As I am informed, I will imediately update this site. (HINT, HINT, ...).

For normal routine operations, at Portland, Me. the YNg was under the controll of the HECP (Harbor Entrance Control Post). The YNg's Deck Log recorded all operations and unusual events. The gate opening Start Time and Completion time was noted every day. And the reverse occured every evening for closing. Usually requiring 20 ± minutes for the operation to open or close the gate. On the occasional difficulty and not being able to close the gate, the YNg was required to have a sound watch (via sonar ?) for underwater penatrations.

Log Books:

To understand this site fully, you should be familiar with the operation of a Harbor Defense Control Post. If you are not sure, then I suggest you review the following site:

Alert situation:

Report from the Examination Vessel of failure to reply or of wrong reply to challenge or of any suspicious circumstances (of an arriving vessel) should put the watch officer at the HECP on instant alert for trouble. The HECP will notify the Examination Gun Battery immediately followed by alerting the Gate vessel(s).

Routine Situations:

The HECP provides the Gate Vessel with instructions. The primary gate (name) (if more than one) is provided information to exhibit prescribed signals, as ordered by the HECP watch officer who is responsible for control of traffic through the gate.

Secondary gates are instructed to exhibit prescribed signals, as ordered by the officer-in-charge of the gate vessel who is responsible for traffic through his gate to the HECP.

NOTE: Where there are two gates in the same net, gate vessels exhibit prescribed signal for Starboard Hand Gate during inbound movement; and for Port Hand Gate during outgoing movement.

Gate vessels log inbound traffic through his gate, and in seperate log enters the outbound traffic through his gate.

All inbound merchant vessels stop at the Examination Vessel and none may proceed beyond the outer Examination Area without permission from the HECP, except for fishermen, yachts and such small craft as present no traffic problem; and could easily be handled, in the event they proved hostile, by the Gate Vessel.

Signals:

Various instructions signaled to Gate Vessals (in CODE) by visual or ilumination could be:

- "Hold all except vessels directly concerned with convoy movement"

- "Halt all traffic"

- "Pass Army, Navy, Coast Guard and special permits via (name) gate."

Other messages to vessels in movement, that the Gate Vessel needs to be aware of are:

- "Proceed in / out against gate signals"

- "When nothing in or near gate, proceed against gate signals"

- "No more request for slow moving traffic via (name) gate"
