Reunion chairman was dambrosio@softcom.net ============== VAH-9 REUNION AND DEDICATION OF THE NAVY MEMORIAL PARK - SANFORD FLORIDA The Navy Memorial Park, located on the airport property, ex-NAS Sanford was dedicated on 30 May 2003 - traditional Memorial Day. The centerpiece of Phase I of the park was the 'unveiling' the Vigilante (RA-5C BuNo 156632) restored to display condition. As the first aircraft the US Navy made available was a Vigilante, it seemed appropriate to "gather the clan" VAH-9 for a reunion, which was well organized and attended. Point man was Chuck Templin - USNNFO@cfl.rr.com ============== The Douglas A-3 Skywarrior, which replaced the AJ Savages in the VAH squadrons which replaced the VC squadrons, was a giant among the airplanes deployed on aircraft carriers. It was the largest airplane ever designed to operate from an aircraft carrier. After being retired from their primary role of nuclear bomber, the large airframes lent themselves to a variety of missions. A celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first flight of the Douglas XA3D-1 Skywarrior was held at the Van Nuys CA Airport in October 2002, in conjunction with the A-3 Skywarrior (Whale) 2002 Reunion.
