LOCKHEED P2V-3B, P2V-3C NEPTUNE

The first nuclear capable carrier based aircraft was the Lockhead P2V-3C modification. The P2V-3B modification was the same plane with AN/ASB-1. The first takeoffs from a carrier, the USS Coral Sea, were made on April 27, 1948 by Cdr. Thomas D. Davies and Lcdr. John P. Wheatley.

The P2Vs went through various versions and modifications, with 1181 built and aprox. 50 still flying. Three excellent websites are http://www.verslo.is/baldur/p2/ (Baldur Sveinsson), http://home.att.net/~jbaugher/aircraft.html, and http://p2vneptune.org/index.shtml
