John Stein's siblings were Martin, Teresa (m. Martin Rommer), and Katie (m. Bertel Mathias, Nevada Iowa); half siblings were Hugo John, and Frank.

One child was born to John and Rosa Stein; Catherine Margaret Stein b. 4 April 1902 Kossuth County Iowa, d. 13 August 1978 Kossuth County Iowa.

Following John Stein's death, Rosa Cecelia Koffman Ruba Stein m. 28 January 14 to John Rammer b. 11 May 1873, d. 1 August 1944. Catherine Margaret Stein was raised by John and Rosa Rammer, and known as Catherine Rammer.
