COMPOSITE SQUADRON FIVE (VC-5) 'SAVAGE SONS' History: Commissioned at NAS Moffet Field CA 9/48 - Commanding Officer Captain John T. Hayward; moved to NAS Norfolk VA 1950; moved to NAS Jacksonville FL 1/24/52; moved to NAS Sanford FL 1/53; redesignated VAH-5 2/3/1956. On 8/31/50 pilots of VC-5 completed qualification of the AJ Savage on the USS Coral Sea, marking the introduction of this aircraft to carrier operations. Personnel: IN MEMORIAM (Courtesy of http://www.thevirtualwall.org/) PAUL AMOS STOKES was born on February 13, 1929 and joined the Armed Forces while in FT SMITH, AR. He served as a 6802 in the Navy. In 22 years of service, he attained the rank of LCDR/O4. On October 17, 1971, at the age of 42, PAUL AMOS STOKES perished in the service of our country in North Vietnam. "I'm not sure when Paul came to VC-5 but he was there when I got there in 1949. I want to think he may have been a plank owner. He was an ALAN and went to ATC while in VC-5. He was still in 5 when I left in 1956. He was one of the first enlisted BN's. His 22 years were all in the Heavies. He was my radioman on a number of P2V flights." Joe Wall - jwallav@att.net (Ed.
