KAYAKPICS

This web page contains some photos that I (and some others, where indicated) have taken while out in one of my kayaks. So far, they are from Rhode Island, the Boston Harbor area, and Connecticut. I regularly add new photos to
the site. If the image is too dark or light, adjust contrast and/or black level on your monitor...I find this to greatly improve some of the photos.

MY PERSONAL KAYAKING HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY CAN BE FOUND AFTER ALL OF THE PHOTOS...BE SURE TO CHOSE 'NEXT PAGE' AT THE APPROPRIATE PROMPT.

Kayaking Links

Narragansett Town Beach, R.I. circa mid to late 1990's

My wife, Aline (Champoux) Moore, tearin' up the waves at Narragansett Town Beach (photo taken before I knew her). Photo by Dave Stoehr.

Newport, R.I. July 2003

Me surfing in my Tsunami double over a washover rock. 20' long, but surfs great! Photo courtesy of Mike Krabach.

Boston Light (1716) December 1999

Oldest lighthouse still in active use in the U.S. A dog always barks ever time I pass by this site.

Rose Island Light, R.I. May 2000

Usually an easy trip from Jamestown or Newport. In season, you can visit inside the lighthouse. Great antiques inside!

Pomham Light, E. Providence May 2000

Can also be seen from the East Bay Bikepath. Easy put-in from E. Providence side of the Washington Bridge, then head south along E. Providence.

The Sloop Providence, Providence R.I. May 2000

Watch the boat traffic, especially in season.

Dutch Island Light, R.I. May 2000

You can camp out on this island. The lighthouse is no longer in use, and access is possible to the top.

Beavertail Light, Jamestown, R.I. August 2000

Caution needed...this is an exposed headland. There are safe landing spots, but not in severe conditions, and you must know where they are.

Castle Hill Light, Newport, R.I. September 2001

Watch the boat traffic...also, strong currents through this area.

Hull Gut towards Peddocks Is., Hull, MA, Sept2000

Strong currents, lots of ship traffic. Consult Elderidge's Tide and Current Guide. Otherwise, a great takeoff point for the Boston Harbor Islands.

Whale Rock, off of Naragansett R.I. JUNE 2001

This used to be the foundation for a lighthouse, but the hurricaine on 1938 swept the lighthouse off its base, killing the attendant. Open ocean conditions.

Warwick Point Light, Warwick, R.I. Nov. 2000

This point of land, though well up in Narragansett Bay, can be tricky in a kayak, due to confused waves and heavy boat traffic.

Conimicut Light, R.I. November 2000

At low tide, you can walk out to this lighthouse on a sandbar from Conimicut Pt. However, due to the sandbar, this area can be treacherous, with strong currents and standing waves if tide opposes a strong wind.

Wickford Light, Wickford R.I. November 2000

Just south of the Wickford breakwater, this lighthouse is no longer in use.

Greenwich Cove, E. Greenwich R.I. Nov. 2000

Easily iced over in the Winter. Large flocks of swans can be seen here. Good protection from most winds.

The Dumplings, Jamestown, R.I. May 2000

The famous 'house on the rocks' visible from the Newport Bridge. Caution: strong currents. Consult the tide tables.

Seekonk River, Providence R.I. May 2000

You can paddle all the way from Providence to
the waterfall in Pawtucket via the Seekonk River. The Brown University crew team practices here.

Fox Island pier, off of Wickford, R.I. January 2001

Usually an easy trip from either North Kingston Town Beach, or Wilson Park boat ramp. The Island is privately owned, but I have never been bothered landing on the sandy western edge, being sure to stay below the mean high water line.

Mount Hope Bay R.I. August 2000

My son, Joshua, looking toward the Somerset Power Plant.

Castle Hill Light Newport R.I. August 2000

Look out for strong currents and heavy boat traffic.

Plum Light / Jamestown Bridges, R.I. Jan 2001

This is an old, abandoned lighthouse.

Plum Light, Jamestown, R.I. January 2001

Comorants often perch on the upper railing of this lighthouse.

Harbor Seal off of Rome Point, R.I. Jan 2001

Young harbor seals are cautiously curious, and will sometimes approach kayaks. Avoid frightening hauled out seals from the rocks, (especially during their birthing season), as this upsets their routine greatly.

Boston Light , Little Brewster Is. MA Jan 2001

Another view of Boston Light.

Boston Light, January 2001

And another still.

Graves Light, outer Boston harbor islands Jan01

This is a trip you do not want to take in a light way...strong currents, submerged rocks, ship traffic, isolation. It is the farthest point east of the Boston Harbor Islands.

The Graves, rocks, outer Boston harbor Jan 01

This view was from the wooden deck of the lighthouse.

Outer Brewster Is. (north) Boston Harbor Jan2001

These outer harbor islands are really beautiful, and worth the trip.

Outer Brewster Is. Harbor Islands Boston Jan01

The cliffs here are not too high, but quite sheer.

The Graves Lighthouse (deck), Boston H.I. Jan01

This is the deck of the Graves Lighthouse.

Great Brewster Is, Boston Harbor Islands Jan01

Waves breaking onto a wall that surrounds much of Great Brewster Island. Boston Light can be seen in the distance.

Great Brewster Spit Boston Harbor Islands Jan01

This sandbar extends from Great Brewster, and goes most of the way to Lovell's Island.

Newport Bridge, R.I. February 2001

A very impressive structure to be under. Watch out for some serious ship traffic if you paddle under the central span.

Gull Rocks / Newport Bridge R.I. Feb. 2001

This rock is a short distance from the Navy base.

Newport Naval Hospital R.I. February 2001

I worked at this hospital, in the pharmacy, when I was stationed in Newport from 1973 to 1976.

Goat Is. Light Newport R.I. February 2001

A fairly small lighthouse, on the northern tip of Goat Island.

Newport Harbor R.I. February 2001

Fishing vessels in Newport harbor.

Long white ship, Newport R.I. Feb 2001

This used to be a sailing vessel.

front view, long white ship, Newport R.I. Feb2001

Front view of the previous ship. Note the flat area on the upper bow...looks like something's been cut off.

Newport R.I. February 2001

More fishing boats.

Goat Island Light, Newport R.I. February 2001

Northern tip of Goat Island...a short paddle to the west brings you to Rose Island.

The Dumplings, Jamestown, R.I. May 2000

You will see more detail if you turn up the brightness on your monitor.

Sandy Point, Warwick, R.I. November 2000

This was a windy day, as you can see from the chop. Notice the bands of ice on the pier's legs. Sandy Point itself is straight ahead.

George's Is., Boston Harbor Islands, MA Sept 01

This red building contains a cafeteria! Most of George's Island is taken up by Fort Warren, a very well preserved Civil War era fort...this site gets my highest recomendation. Bring a camera.

Sakonnet Harbor. Little Compton R.I. Feb2001

An easy put-in spot, with available parking. Paddle south to Sakonnet Point, or north to Fogland Point.

West Island, Sakonnet Pt, R.I. February 2001

These three uprights are the corners of a former building, but look to me like Easter Island statues from a distance.

Sakonnet Light, Little Compton, RI. Feb. 2001

Don't let the lighthouse reflection fool you...this was an unusually calm day. This area is most often an advanced paddle, with large swells and currents.

West Island, Sakonnet Point , R.I. feb 2001

Notice the ice on these rocks, which are 15-20 feet high. There was a strong wind the night before, with low temperatures.

Gull Rock off Cliff Walk, Newport R.I. feb 2001

This is the large rock off the Tea House, which is located on the cliff walk. This was my first spearfishing site in Rhode Island.
