A necropsy (animal autopsy) done on my 4-year-old red/white neutered Persian cat, RUDY, by Dr. Bernard Mangone DVM, at Phoenix's Emergency Animal Clinic on May 17, 2004.
At my request, he submitted a total of 8 digital photos to me on CD. Here are 6 clear ones that I selected for this page. ALL PHOTOS ARE COPYRIGHTED. Text and photos on this page are intended for educational purpose only. It took a major decision on my part to decide whether I want to share the photos of Rudy's diseased kidneys. Thank-you in advance for your kind respect.
If you'd like to share your experience / photos here, please e-mail me. Thanks.

From his findings:

"mini-autopsy = very small kidneys with a cystic cortex and a very reduced corticomedullary ratio. Likely congenital anomally"

cause of death: congenital renal disease/failure or
polycystic kidney disease (PKD).

• current prevention: ultrasound test on parents before breeding to be sure whether both parents were tested negative for presentation of cysts. No DNA testing exists and bloodwork is not effective (unless kidney defect reached advanced stage). NOT breeding even one positive parent - one negative parent is the best prevention.
• current treatment or cure: none, as hereditary.
• common symptoms: lethargy, excessive drinking/urination, vomiting, lack of appetite, weight loss, severe bad breath.

Dr. Mangone removing Rudy's kidneys...

...distinguishing small round purple-ish cyst...

...inside kidney, showing some redness at core and surface, as well as hidden cysts in various locations.

Showing total redness and irregularity of kidney (normal kidneys are pink and smooth)...

...distinguishing small round white-ish cyst. Note also that cyst is that, a cyst in general, as in cystic acne on your face.

Close-up of several round white 'polycysts' on kidney.

Rudy in healthier days, exploring nature during a photo shoot. This is around the time I adopted him.

R.I.P. my sweet little boy. Your spirit is forever alive in my heart. We shall meet again someday.
