Frequently Asked Questions

Here is an attempt to answer questions that have been posed to me over the years!

How long have you been performing as a Female Impersonator?

I performed my first Drag Show on August 21st, 1984, at Zippers in Tulsa. I did "Better Be Good To Me" by Spider, and "Pretty Mess" by Vanity, and made $38.00 in tips! Whoo-Hoo!

Exactly how tall are you?

Okay, in stocking feet I am 6 ft. tall, and with heels, add another 2 - 5 inches! Oh, and with hair another 4 - 8 inches!

About how long does it take to get into drag every night?

After all of these years I have managed to cut the time down from two hours to about an hour.

Do you shave your legs?

Whoa no! The illusion of long sleek legs is created by 3-4 pair of light flesh-colored tights (matte please, not shiny) and a pair or two of pantyhose (sheer-to-the-waist please) over that!

How about your eyebrows? Shave or pluck?

No again! I use a men's grooming item called Clubman Moustache Wax which is a non-hardening wax that I apply over my eyebrows to smooth over the hair, then I sponge on some base, and there's a clean slate on which to draw a new brow. Wash it off later and there's your boy-brow still there!

When you're wearing a revealing costume, where do you "put it", so to speak?

Uhhh, I'm afraid the Union won't allow me to reveal such a big--I mean closely-guarded trade secret!

Have you ever thought about having a sex change?

Although I have many friends who are Transexuals, I have always been, and always will be a Female Impersonator. By that I mean an entertainer who, after performing, is more than ready to resume my everday life as a male!

Why the male stage name, David James?

I began my career as Amanda Love from 1984 to 1995. (I toyed with Connie Lingus before that..Thank god I changed my mind!) When I was invited to Las Vegas in September of 1995 to be a participant at the 10th Anniversary of La Cage at the Riviera Hotel and Casino, I was expected to appear under a male name, as is common. I inverted my first two names to become David James, and it felt good to be recognized by the audience as David, not "Amanda"! So it stayed!

Where do you get, or who makes your clothes / shoes?

At my size (10-14) I can buy most things off-the-rack! I also invest in previously-worn clothing by other performers! Vintage clothing stores, consignment shops, and thrift shops will work IF you are lucky! But the Internet can provide anyone with a suitable wardrobe nowadays! My shoe size as a man is 8 1/2 so I wear a 10 as a woman which is rather easy to find!

Plans for the Future...?

I plan to continue to work at the Hi-Lo Club on Saturday Nights. I am also looking into booking shows into cruise ships, and casinos. I am also considering re-entering the pageant system, with my eye on Miss Gay America...! Hmm... We'll see!
