A FILMOGRAPHY OF MARJORIE BEEBE

Marjorie Beebe's filmography is a work in progress and will probably always remain a work in progress. We established this site because we really love her in the few roles we have seen her play. We want to share that love with you, and we ask you to share with us any information you may have about Marjorie, her life and her films. Maybe it's a film you once saw her in, maybe some old press cutting. Just let us know, and we'll respond.

Part 1- Fox

Marjorie Beebe began her film career with Fox in the late 1920s. Neither of us has ever seen any of these Fox films. We have pieced together what information we can and have identified the films in which she seems to have played a significant role. Then we list the others we know of in which she made an appearance.

The Farmer's Daughter (1928)
By all accounts the best Marjorie Beebe vehicle of them all. She got rave reviews for her performance in the title role. She played the bright-eyed country girl who gets her head turned by the city dude but ends up getting her own back on him. The most sought after of Marjie's lost films. All we have is the promotional photo displayed on the site.

Homesick (1928)
Marjorie is the girl two fellows are competing for in this promising sounding Mickey Cohen comedy.

Love Hungry (1928)
Marjie plays a raucous chorus girl, best pal to the leading lady in a role that would have suited her theatrical strengths.

Thief in the Dark (1928)
Marjorie is part of a travelling troupe in what could be an interesting early performance.

Sound Your A's (1928) Sound like musical mayhem from Marjie and her friends blowing up a storm and annoying their landlord.

In Holland (1928) Marjie is the female lead in this comedy of tulips in old Amsterdam.

Rich But Honest (1927) Marjie plays that broad comic chorus girl role again.

These are the sought after films of Marjorie Beebe's early career.

There are four others from this period that she seems to have starred in, all with the sort of titles that resonate with Marjie Beebe's sexy, mischievous and madcap sense of humour.

The Kiss Doctor (1928)
Four A. M. (1928)
A Low Necker (1927)
Why Blondes Leave Home (1927)

Others she made during this first phase of her career

Not Quite Decent (1929)
Speakeasy (1929)
Colleen (1927)
Very Confidential (1927)
Hills of Peril (1927)
Ankles Preferred (1927)
What! No Spinach? (1926)

Part 2- Mack Sennett

The most accurate records available show that Marjorie Beebe appeared in 41 films for Mack Sennett. To be strictly correct she is credited with 40 roles, but stills from a 41st film reveal a further uncredited appearance. All but one of these were shorts; all were talkies; all were made between 1929 and 1933. All were distributed by Educational Pictures.

1930 and 1931 were her most productive years. In 1929 she was just starting out with Sennett. In 1932 she made her one feature length film with him which will be why the total for that year is so small, and it all went pear shaped for Sennett (and effectively for Marjie) when he went bust in 1933.

Most filmographies are compiled from the most recent to the earliest. We started this one with her first silent roles for Fox so we shall continue to go forward rather than back in time.

We do not claim to have seen the majority of these but we have seen some and have reliable information on others. We shall try and highlight the best ones.

1929
Clancy at the Bat
A yarn about baseball

A Hollywood Star
One of those films about films

The New Halfback
From baseball to football

"Uppercut" O'Brien
And on to boxing- Marjie, though the female lead, does not have a big role in this

1930
Bulls and Bears
Stock market farce. She has a good song and dance routine in this one

Campus Crushes
She has a good solid role in this as the daughter causing her father
problems with boyfriends.

The Chumps
Country bumpkins and city slickers

Divorced Sweethearts
She may not be the lead in this one

Don't Bite Your Dentist
This is the 41st- uncredited but in surviving stills

Fat Wives For Thin
Was Marjie the fat one?

He Trumped Her Ace
The first of the bridge spoofs.

Honeymoon Zeppelin
The first of the aircraft spoofs

Match Play
Back to the sports comedies- golf this time Walter Hagen's in it

Racket Cheers
RECOMMENDED. Marjie plays a scheming con girl with a fondness for the liquor which brings her down to earth with a bump. Wait for the great boat sequence- Marjie on board firing a machine gun to repel boarders and nonchalantly smoking a ciggie as she does
.
Radio Kisses
An agony aunt goes through her own agonies of love.

Rough Idea Of Love
A nightclub entertainer working on her man. Another machine gun sequence it is said. Sounds a bit like "Racket Cheers"

Strange Birds
Exactly what is says apparently. An  ornithological piece

Sugar Plum Papa
We think Marjie's the maid in this big house caper.

1931
The Bride's Mistake
Marjie gets into problems on her wedding day.

The Cowcatcher's Daughter
RECOMMENDED- this one with Marjie playing fast and loose with her Pop and her intended husband has its own section on the site Marjorie Beebe at her charming, comic, mischievous best.
.
Dance Hall Marge
A good time girl with a jealous boyfriend trying to keep a punter at bay. This is one definitely worth tracking down

Ex-Sweeties
Another two men fighting for Marjie's hand.

Ghost Parade
Marjie has her moments in a haunted house.

Hold 'er Sheriff
RECOMMENDED. Marjie reprises her "Cowcatcher's Daughter" Western role, this time as the Sheriff's daughter, complete with sixguns blazing.

Monkey Business In Africa
On safari

Movie Town
RECOMMENDED. Another movie about movies. Marjie appears as
herself basically. Worth it for that.

One Yard To Go
Another football movie. Working title (or one of them) "When It's Pigskin
 Time in November"!

A Poor Fish
Fishing yarn.

Speed
More high flying jinks with Marjie in her old cowgirl clobber.

We'll take a pause there. 1932 was to see her Marjie Beebe in one of her finest known roles "Doubling in the Quickies", and right now we are going to work on making that our second featured Beebe short after "The Cowcatcher's Daughter". We hope to have it up and running soon.
