ROBERT E. HOWARD
|
Although he only wrote professionally for less than a dozen years before ending his life at the age of thirty, Robert E. Howard (1906-1936) essentially created the genre known as "swords and sorcery." He is best known, of course, for creating Conan the Barbarian but his many other heroic figures were just as compelling or even more so.... Solomon Kane, King Kull, Bran Mak Morn, Turlogh O'Brien, Breckenridge Elkins, El Borak, enough to fill a table at the literary Valhalla.
Howard had flaws and shortcomings as a writer that he did not live long enough to overcome, but at his best, he remains the unsurpassed master of headlong action and excitement. His stories are so dynamic that the books just about jump out of your hands. There has been no writer since quite like him.
