ROME: The Complete Series

Richly layered and visually stunning, ROME: THE COMPLETE SERIES takes a look at Roman history and the building of the Empire through the eyes of two ordinary soldiers whose fate is entwined with that of the city itself.  An intimate drama of love and betrayal, masters and slaves, and husbands and wives, the series chronicles the turbulent era that saw the fall of the Republic and the creation of an empire. A perfect holiday gift, the highly anticipated release of ROME: THE COMPLETE SERIES will be available in stores on DVD and Blu-Ray, with bonus features and exclusive materials on both formats.
Praised by the Boston Globe as "irresistible-compelling and addictive," ROME: THE COMPLETE SERIES begins a half century before the dawn of Christianity, when the city was the wealthiest in the world and the epicenter of a sprawling empire.  Founded on principles of shared power and fierce personal competition, the Republic was created to prevent any one man from seizing absolute control.  But as the ruling class became wealthier, the foundation began to crumble and old values went to the wayside.  This set the stage for "modern" politics - infighting, corruption and party lines - with everyone from provincial commoners and soldiers to aristocrats and leaders of the Republic - struggling for social mobility and preservation of place in society.  With prominent historical figures like Julius Caesar, Marc Antony and Cleopatra, ROME: THE COMPLETE SERIES brings ancient Rome to life in intensely personal terms.
I was spellbound from the moment I put in the first disc of ROME: The Complete Series. This set is filled with the passion, pomp and glory that was Rome. A TV series with the look of a major motion picture. No wonder it won 7 Emmy Awards. But be warned Rome: The Complete Series is rated TV-MA. Get your copy today.

Bonus Features:

The Blu-ray set offers an amplified viewing experience, all in HD 1080p video and DTS-HD master audio 5.1, as well as the features "All Roads Lead to Rome," an in-depth, interactive on-screen guide prepared by the series' co-producer/historical consultant Jonathan Stamp, and "Bloodlines," an exclusive, interactive guide highlighting the connections between the soldiers, Senate and families of Rome.  The Standard Definition set features an extensive photo gallery, a character insert as well as "All Roads Lead to Rome."

In addition to the above, both DVD and Blu-ray sets also feature the following bonus material:

- 13 revealing audio commentaries from cast and crew
- 4 featurettes that examine the history of Rome and several of its more famous citizens
- 3 behind-the-scenes featurettes that explore the expansive production
- 2 featurettes that detail the creation of pivotal scenes

THE No. 1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY the complete first season

As a young girl growing up in the African nation of Botswana, Precious Ramotswe was encouraged by her father to follow her dreams, no matter what. Now in her mid-30s, Precious is doing just that - by opening her country's first and only female-owned detective agency for the benefit of those who need help the most.
The first major film/TV project to be shot entirely on location in Botswana, 'The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency' is based on the best-selling novels by Alexander McCall Smith and co-written and executive produced by Richard Curtis and the late Anthony Minghella.
Like McCall's novels, the series chronicles the adventures of Precious Ramotswe (Jill Scott), the cheerful, eminently sensible proprietor of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, located in the Kgale Hill Shopping Center on the outskirts of Gaborone. Aided by her efficient yet high-strung secretary Grace Makutsi (Anika Noni Rose), Precious investigates a variety of cases, helping townspeople solve mysteries in their lives, from missing children to philandering husbands to con-artist scams.
I popped in this DVD not knowing what to expect. And all it took was the first episode and I was hooked. Jill Scott is great as Precious Ramotswe, but the true star of this series is Botswana and its people. You will fall in love with The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency. I did.

Bonus Features:

- Botswana: The Gem Of Africa
- Anthony Minghella's No. 1 Film
- The Beat of Botswana
- The Making of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency
- The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency: Author's Diary

Russell Simmons Presents BRAVE NEW VOICES

Russell Simmons Presents Brave New Voices is the latest -spoken word- creation from entertainment and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, who previously put the spotlight on comedy and poetry through two long-running hit series on HBO. This latest edition features a new generation of dynamic voices as teams of teen poets from across the country do verbal battle in a poetry competition. Russell Simmons Presents Brave New Voices includes a bonus feature, "Rhyme & Reason" - ten complete performances from the New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Honolulu teams in the finals.
Called "extraordinarily moving" by the Oakland Tribune, Russell Simmons Presents Brave New Voices is narrated by Queen Latifah and follows six U.S. teams and their mentors as they prepare for a chance to compete at the 2008 Brave New Voices National Youth Poetry Slam Championship in Washington, D.C.  Transcending race, class, gender, orientation and politics, the seven-part HBO series brings together an amazing blend of spoken word, hip-hop, poetry, music, voice and imagination as it focuses on several members of promising teams, showing them fine-tuning their poems in practice sessions, sharing their individual backstories, reflecting on how the spoken word has changed them, and finally, traveling to the nation's capital to join other teams for the final competition.
Russell Simmons Presents Brave New Voices, along with the HBO late-night series Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry and Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam, are the creations of Simmons and director/producer Stan Lathan.
I put this DVD in expecting to not like it. But the young people in this film changed my mind with the powerful poetry that came from there lives and there hearts. Do your self a favor and buy "Russell Simmons Presents Brave New Voices" today, but be warned this DVD is rated TV-MA.

FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS: The Complete Second Season

Flight of the Conchords sparked critical raves and garnered four Emmy® nominations, including Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, by the end of its first-season run on HBO®.  Now, to the delight of their ever-growing fan base, Flight of the Conchords: The Complete Second Season brings more of this New Zealand duo's unconventional antics, quirky songs and awkward romantic trysts to television. Flight of the Conchords: The Complete Second Season includes hilarious deleted scenes, outtakes, a mini-documentary, mock commercials for Dave's Pawn Shop and more!
Despite living as Big Apple bohemians for over a year, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie still remain as hopelessly out of place in Manhattan as a kiwi in a pigeon nest.  Flight of the Conchords: The Complete Second Season follows Bret and Jemaine as they resort to a variety of outrageous tactics in their continuing attempt to jump-start their lives and career - from taking desperate measures to pay the bills to dating an Australian (a taboo in New Zealand). Will Bret and Jemaine ever find excitement, romance, and the elusive paying music gig?
The band Flight of the Conchords has earned a worldwide cult following through their live performances. After teaming up in 1998, Clement and McKenzie performed briefly under the names Moustache and Vested Interest before becoming Flight of the Conchords, which came from McKenzie's dream about Concorde airplanes. They were named Best Alternative Comedy Act at the 2005 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, the Best Newcomer at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, and were nominated for the Perrier Comedy Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.  Flight of the Conchords released the live album Folk the World in 2002, and headlined a six-part BBC Radio 2 series which won a Sony UK Comedy Award.  In February 2008 they received the Grammy® Award for Best Comedy Album for The Distant Future, and their subsequent self-titled album entered the U.S. charts at number three and received a Grammy® nomination in the Best Comedy Album category.  Flight of the Conchords made their debut on HBO in 2005 with their own One Night Stand special.
I think you will get a kick out of New Zealand's "4th Most Popular Folk Parody Duo." I know I did. But be warned this DVD is rated TV-MA. Get your copy today.

Bonus DVD Features:

- "Flight of the Conchords: On-Air" - a mini-documentary featuring Bret and Jemaine at their droll best.
- "Dave's Pawn Shop" commercials - Bret and Jemaine's friend Dave keeps the prices low and the energy high in his mock TV ads for Mohumbhai and Sons.
- "New Zealand Consulate Meetings with Murray and Greg" - hilarious snippets from meetings with Murray, Bret and Jemaine's inept manager, and his associate Greg
- Deleted Scenes
- Outtakes
- Hidden Easter Egg - savvy DVD users who like a little treasure hunting will find the hidden link within the menus on the DVD.

GREY GARDENS

Highlighted by memorable performances from two-time Golden Globe® nominee Drew Barrymore (Guncrazy, Irreconcilable Differences) and two-time Academy Award® winner Jessica Lange (Tootsie, Blue Sky), the HBO Films drama Grey Gardens  tells the tender and intimate story of "Little Edie" and "Big Edie" Beale, two charming eccentrics who were relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The DVD includes an audio commentary with the executive producers and a featurette comparing and contrasting the film with the original 1975 documentary.
Filmmakers Albert and David Maysles catapulted the two women from virtual obscurity to cult status in the 1975 documentary that showed the mother and daughter living in squalor and near isolation in their decaying 28-room mansion.  Thirty-five years later and interested in what transpired in the years before the documentary, director/writer Michael Sucsy's original story for Grey Gardens offers a wry, behind-the-scenes look at the reclusive Beales that spans over four decades.  Using the documentary of the same name as a framework, the film focuses on the downward spiral of their lives - from their glamorous, high society days in the 30's to the 70's and the circumstance behind their dwindling wealth and grasp on reality - and eventual financial rescue by their niece and cousin, Jackie O.
Grey Gardens co-stars Jeanne Tripplehorn (Big Love® from HBO) as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Ken Howard (Michael Clayton) as Phelan Beale, Malcolm Gets (Caroline in the City) as George "Gould" Strong, Daniel Baldwin (Mulholland Falls) as Julius "Cap" Krug, and Arye Gross (Gone in Sixty Seconds) and Justin Louis (Saw IV and V) as the Maysles brothers. Teleplay by Michael Sucsy and Patricia Rozema, directed by Michael Sucsy, executive produced by Lucy Barzun Donnelly, Rachael Horovitz and Michael Sucsy, and produced by David Coatsworth.
I saw the documentary back in the 70's and could not wait to see this movie. Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore bring Beales to life and give us a better look at the tragic bitter-sweet life of "Big Edie" and "Little Edie" in "GREY GARDENS".

Special Features:
- Audio commentary with executive producers Michael Sucsy, Lucy Barzun Donnelly and Rachael Horovitz.
- "Grey Gardens: Then and Now" - a featurette that compares and contrasts the HBO Film with the Maysles documentary and includes clips from the documentary as well as enlightening interviews with Drew Barrymore, Jessica Lange and the Emmy®-winning director of the documentary Albert Maysles.

THE ALZHEIMER'S PROJECT

THE ALZHEIMER'S PROJECT Three-disc DVD Set Includes 4-part Documentary Series, Plus 12 Short Supplementary Films Packed with Over 9 Hours of Vital Information and Personal Stories.
Considered the second-most-feared illness in America after cancer and the sixth leading cause of death in this country, Alzheimer's is an irreversible and progressive disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills.  With as many as five million Americans possibly affected with the disease today, the number could soar as the baby-boom generation reaches retirement in 2011, putting even more of a burden on America's already fragile healthcare system.  Despite these sobering statistics, there are now significant scientific breakthroughs that are bringing genuine hope to the horizon.
These groundbreaking advances are the cornerstone of The Alzheimer's Project from HBO, an extraordinary four-part documentary series with additional short supplemental films that will change the way Americans think about the disease.  Far from detailing a litany of grim data, The Alzheimer's Project  will explore some of the most noteworthy developments that can improve our chances of remaining cognitively vital as we age, while also taking a close look at the realities of the disease and its effects on both those with Alzheimer's and their families.
In stores and available via digital download on June 2, 2009, The Alzheimer's Project can be pre-ordered the same day as the series premiere on the HBO. The Alzheimer's Project DVD is part of a robust multimedia initiative that HBO is mounting across all of its digital platforms including multiplex channels, HBO On Demand, HBO Podcasts, HBO.com and the HBO Channel on YouTube.  In addition, The Alzheimer's Project includes a companion book published by Public Affairs Books, a website and a nationwide community-based outreach campaign that will help people access resources and clinical trials.
Presented by HBO Home Entertainment in a three-disc set, The Alzheimer's Project is anchored by the four-part documentary series, plus 12 short supplementary films. The first of the four documentaries is "The Memory Loss Tapes," an up-close and personal look at seven individuals living with Alzheimer's, each in an advancing state of dementia across the full spectrum of the disease.  "Momentum In Science," is a two-part state-of-the-science report that takes viewers inside the laboratories and clinics of 24 leading scientists and physicians, revealing some of their most promising developments.  "Grandpa, Do You Know Who I Am" With Maria Shriver (who also serves as an executive producer of the series), captures what it means to be a child or grandchild of one who suffers from the disease.  "Caregivers" highlights the sacrifices and successes of people who experience their loved ones gradual descent into dementia.

The DVD also features "Momentum in Science: The Supplementary Series," consisting of twelve short films that provide an in-depth look into the scientific advancements being made in research and the medical understanding of the disease.  The supplementary films include:

- "Understanding and Attacking Alzheimer's" - a look at an experimental vaccine on the front lines of research
- "How Far We Have Come in Alzheimer's Research" -  shows the progress made since the disease was discovered more than a century ago
- "Identifying Mild Cognitive Impairment" - highlights the importance of distinguishing among the various dementias that can occur with aging
- "The Role of Genetics in Alzheimer's" - answers questions about the role genetics plays in the development of drugs to prevent the disease
- "Advances in Brain Imaging" - shows how innovations have transformed our understanding of how memory fails and how this relates to future improvements in diagnosis
- "The Alzheimer's Dilemma" - puts into perspective the societal and financial impact of Alzheimer's as the world population grows older
- "The Connection Between Insulin and Alzheimer's" - explores the role insulin plays in the brain and how unhealthy insulin levels may be eminently treatable
- "Inflammation, the Immune System and Alzheimer's" - explains how both these systems work and follows a scientist's quest to bring an anti-Alzheimer's vaccine to market
- "The Benefit of Diet and Exercise in Alzheimer's" puts hard science behind lifestyle choices and their potential for treating or preventing Alzheimer's
- "Cognitive Reserve: What the Religious Orders Study is Revealing about Alzheimer's" - reports on a case study by the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary that explores the idea of cognitive reserve, how it relates to the disease, and the personality traits that may play a role in preserving brain function
- "Searching for an Alzheimer's Cure: The Study of Flurizan" - takes a look at the largest Alzheimer's drug trial to date, what the results were, and what it means for the field
- "The Pulse of Drug Development" - answers questions about the progress being made in drug development, the benefits of participating in clinical trials, and the research being done on herbal remedies

I have been a health care professional for over 30 years. During that time family members of my clients that have Alzheimer's have asked a lot of very specific questions. And I'm sorry to say that my answers are not always what they want to hear. I have already recommended "The Alzheimer's Project" to several people and I am going to make sure that the facility that I work for gets a copy, as I think every hospital, nursing home and mental health center in the country should have this valuable resource. If someone in your family or someone you know has Alzheimer's you need to get "The Alzheimers Project" now.

The Alzheimer's Project, created by the team behind the Emmy® Award-winning HBO Addiction series, is a presentation of HBO Documentary Films and the National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of Health in association with the Alzheimer's Association, The Fidelity® Charitable Gift Fund and Geoffrey Beene Gives Back Alzheimer's Initiative.
