The skin is the interface between our internal and external organs. It is the largest and most adaptable organ in the body and reflects the state of one's health. All aging and illness result from the accumulation of toxins and the damage caused to the cells and tissues by free radicals. Free radicals are formed when oxygen is metabolized. This oxidation is a naturally occuring process of respiration and digestion. It is a lot like rusting. These metabolized oxygen molecules are missing an electron which they will rob from other cells, therefore causing damage if there are not enough antioxidants available. Wrinkles, dry skin, gray hair and stiff joints are the result of free radical damage. Besides the internal, naturally occuring causes of free radical damage, there are outside influences such as: pollution, toxins, alcohol, smoking, poor nutrition (especially when increased amounts of sugar and trans-fats are part of the diet), sleep deprivation, pharmaceutical drugs, recreational drugs, harsh soaps and cosmetics, prolonged sun exposure and stress of all kinds. Prolonged exposure to the sun creates free radical damage by activating enzymes that break down fat in the skin cells, thereby producing arachidonic acid, which leads to inflammation. Dairy is high in arachidonic acid and is well known for causing inflammation and allergy type reactions. Hard cheese, whole milk and animal fats are all high in arachidonic acid. Soft cheese like cottage cheese are a better choice (always choose organic). Unfortunately most sunscreens cause some degree of free radical damage in and of themselves. This happens in the process of their trapping and reflecting UV rays. For this reason if one is going to use a sunscreen it is important that it contains nutrients to nourish and diminish the effects of free radicals. Sunscreen products that contain phenols, petrolatum (which research has shown to cause acne) and petroleum derivatives, like mineral oil, can increase photosensitivity. They also interfere with your body's own moisturizing abilities and create chapping and drying of the skin. It can suffocate and clog pores, which eventually can lead to enlarging of the pores. Products that contain alcohol destroy the skin's pH balance and dissolve the body's natural moisturizers, thus contributing to the creation of wrinkles. Other nasty ingredients that are in many sunscreen and other skin care products include the parabens - ethyl, methyl, propyl and butyl. These chemicals have been known to cause skin rashes and allergic reactions. Some natural sunscreens include: shea butter, avocado oil, sesame oil (which blocks 45% of UV rays) and coconut oil (which reflects radiation and is cooling). It may be best to avoid the sun at its peak hours of 10 A.M. to 3 P.M., wear a large brimmed hat and use long sleeves to cover up if you must be out in the full sun rather than relying on sunscreens. DIETARY FACTORS AND SUPPLEMENTATION To neutralize free radical damage it is best to have an antioxidant system of vitamins, minerals and enzymes working for you. This includes antioxidant rich foods such as avocado, sweet peppers, berries, melons, green leafy vegetables, oranges, squash, salmon, tomatoes and pineapples (use moderately as they are also high in sugar). Spices which are high in antioxidants include: dill, coriander, rosemary, sage, thyme, mint, fennel, garlic and ginger. It is also important to have a diet with adequate protein. Fish, poultry and the light proteins from vegetables are the best. Beef is pro-inflammatory so should be eaten in moderation. Sugar in the diet is damaging because it can attach to proteins making them less flexible and stiff. This leads to aged looking skin and is called cross linking. Free radicals in general activate chemical reactions that produce collagen-digesting enzymes. Collagen is what gives skin its firmness and elasticity. Without collagen skin sags and is wrinkled. Avocado has substances that are high in vitamins A, D and E and has 20% essential fatty acids that prevent this cross linking and damage. Diets that are high in carbohydrates require more insulin to break down naturally occuring sugars so they can be used by the cells. Increased insulin creates pro-inflammatory chemicals during this process which can lead to aging and degenerative illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, irritable bowel syndrome, glaucoma, alzheimer's disease and retinal deterioration. These are low glycemic index foods: These are foods lower in sugars therefore requiring less insulin to break down: Green leafy and non-starchy vegetables, asparagus, beans, broccoli, cabbage, pears, melons, berries, citrus, kiwi and peaches. These are high glycemic index foods: banana, mango, papaya, carrots, corn, pasta, rice and potatoes. Yams are a better choice than potatoes as they are higher in proteins and carotenes. FOOD CHOICES FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE DRY- Foods high in essential fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, flax and avocado OILY- Avoid greasy foods, fried foods and hydrogenated oils MATURE- Avocado ACNE- Vitamin A and beta carotene rich foods, such as squash, cabbage, melons, spinach and broccoli ROSACEA- Antioxidant rich foods, fruits and veggies, especially broccoli, brussel sprouts and cabbage The anti-oxidant supplements most recommended to neutralize free radical damage are: ESTER C strengthens white blood cells which are defenders against bacterial and viral invasion. It stimulates fibroblasts which produce collagen and elastin in the skin. These collagens give the skin its tautness and suppleness. Ester C is absorbed more quickly than other Vitamin C's such as L-ascorbic acid. It also keeps its potency for years. Useful for fine lines, wrinkles, inflammed, irritated and/or sun damaged skin. VITAMIN E is a powerful antioxidant and emollient. Look for the tocotrienols and high potency tocopherols. Tocotrienols are 40-50 times stronger than tocopherols in repairing skin damage, decreasing free radicals and protecting the heart and circulatory system. It is helpful in healing redness and scaling of the skin. ALPHA LIPOIC ACID (ALA) is a metabolic antioxidant that is both fat and water soluble. It is the most powerful antioxidant, 400 times stronger than Vitamin C and E. It boosts the effects of Vitamin C, E and glutathione by protecting them and recycling them back into the system. ALA increases cell metabolism, therefore increasing energy and the capacity to heal. It protects DNA and prevents the action of certain factors which can produce inflammatory chemicals called cytokines. These cytokines can damage cells and accelerate aging. ALA helps the body to utilize sugar for energy, decreasing cross linking (also known as glycation). During glycation sugars attach themselves to proteins making the proteins inflexible and stiff. The sugar is not able to be used as fuel when this happens and inflexible proteins are not optimally functional. ALA promotes the production of nitric oxide which helps control blood flow to the skin and therefore can reduce inflammation and edema (swelling). ALA is a chelator that helps the body to detoxify heavy metals as well. It is useful for the reduction of enlarged pores, fine lines, wrinkles, bags and puffiness under the eyes, acne scars, sallow and dull skin. It has also been useful in cases of Rosacea (redness, bumps and broken vessels on the face), with results noted in 2 weeks. Generally this condition is treated with antibiotics which can be detrimental to the immune system. DMAE or DIMETHYLAMINOETHANOL is known to boost the effects of other antioxidants and to protect cells from free radical damage. DMAE stabilizes the cell membrane. It has a firming effect and is considered a quick fix face lift when mixed with other antioxidants, nutrients and amino acids. Aging leads to a decrease in the acetycholine production which is needed for neurotransmission and muscle contraction, thus keeping the skin firm. DMAE is associated with this acetycholine production and also prevents the production of arachidonic acid and other pro-inflammatory mediators at the cell membrane. DMAE is helpful when there is a loss of firmness in the skin, fine lines and over tired skin. It can create a temporary plumping of the lips and will improve the appearance of dimpling on the thighs, stomach, buttocks and/or hips. ALPHA HYDROXY AND BETA HYDROXY ACIDS are acids found in milk (lactic acid), sugars (glycolic acid) and fruits. They work in synergy with antioxidants. They work to exfoliate the dead layers of skin leaving fresh new skin on the surface. This gives skin a glowing supple look. They work well for razor bumps, rough dry skin, fine lines or uneven pigmentation and age spots. Glycolic acid is useful for the treatment of skin diseases that are characterized by scaling (ichthyosis). Salicylic acid is considered a Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) and is anti inflammatory, helping to decrease free radicals. ACTIVITIES AND SUBSTANCES TO AVOID It is best to reduce or eliminate the use of tobacco, alcohol and all non-essential drugs. Avoid all hydrogenated and fried foods. Trans-fats are a health hazard. Avoid pro-inflammatory foods such as red meat. Keep the balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids at a 2:1 ratio. Omega-6s found in animal fats are pro-inflammatory. Better Omega-6 choices are sunflower and safflower oils. Avoid high carbohydrate or high sugar foods. Avoid large meals and eat smaller meals to help balance insulin levels. Avoid dehydration. Be sure to drink 1/2 ounce of pure, clean water for every pound of body weight each day. Avoid all chemicals, pollutants, toxins and additives. Read the labels of the foods you are eating and the personal care products you are putting on your body. Avoid all stressful situations. To decrease the effects of stress try meditation, massage and other forms of energetic clearing. Exercise is a good outlet for stress reduction providing it is not done to an excess, as pushing oneself is a stress in and of itself and can lead to free radical damage. Walking is a good form of exercise as is yoga and stretching. As you can see the skin reflects one's health. There are things you can do to help your skin and these considerations will also help your overall health. Why not be good to yourself and put your best face forward? HERE IS AN IMPORTANT AND INFORMATIONAL REFERENCE YOU CAN ACCESS FOR FREE: Since the government cannot mandate safety studies of cosmetics, and the cosmetic industry's review panel has assessed only 11 percent of 10,500 ingredients in products you may want to check the safety of the products you are using. California recently passed a law that would publicly list products containing ingredients linked to cancer and birth defects. You can go to the Skin Deep database to learn what's in — or unknown about — products and brands you use, and find safer choices for you and your family.
