our self focus camera must be having problems because out of 4 rolls of 24 exposure film we got only 4 decent photos and all the rest either don't exist at all, are very dark are wide angle when supposed to be zoom or are burry! We were going to pu upa buch of photos here so you all could see them but...
Day 1:
We were going to leave for Pittsburg,NH very early in the am but it was pouring and we did not want to load the pickup bed in the rain AND dark so we waited and left at 8:30 am. The trip took longer than usual because of the heavy rain. We stopped at 11 to call and see how Loki was. Stopped in Colebrook for milk , butter, tuna etc and only after I am already out of the truck and heading to the door does Rob tell me this is the IGA where those State Troopers were killed. GREAT. Got to Pittsburg at about 1 and took a quick drive up Rt 3 (moose alley) just to see if any were out as we could not check in til 2. We check into the cabin and unload stuff which makes the kitchen floor look like a lake! Get everything put away and walk dogs who will not potty because the ground does not smell right. Eat some lunch and then the Rain has let up and is now just drizzling so Rob goes fishing for a bit and the dogs and I just rest. There is a phone in the lodge but not in the cabin but we do have cable tv. I go to the lodge to call and check on the dogs and look at all the mounted animals. They have a pair of mose antlers that were found locked together and the moose had starved to death. They had them mounted with real skins (from different moose oboviously) in a corner with mirrors so they looked like they were still fighting Nothing much else occurred today except Bill finally peed but Xena says no way smells wrong
Day 2: Walk dogs again. Bill finally poops and Xena pees but still no poop. Go out to breakfast and come back and get ready for our hike up Mount Magalloway . Dog packs loaded with first aid kit, extra rain gear, their snack and our snacks. My pack loaded with our drinks and spare socks etc and Rob carries the dog's water. Drive to the trail head and it is raining steady and we start up the trail. In dry weather this is a 1 hour hike each way but because of the rain and mud it takes us 2 hours to get to the top. This is a STEEP winding trail and admitedly none of us are in prime hike shape! The dogs finally poop on the way up! I can imagine they had too.. We reach the top and of course can see nothing but clouds. VERY creepy. We take off the packs for lunch and we all get snacks and drinks and then hide in the warm up shack while it pours! The rain lets up and we walk out to the overlook. What a drop. Deep into a nothingness it looked like! Then back to the fire tower and Bill and I climb up 2 flight of the tower stairs (more like a ladder) BRAVE Bill does what I ask! And then I back down while helping Bill down. What a good boy!
Then we pack back up and start down the other trail. This one has a brook running down it from the rain and is all rock like a river bottom. Again this trail is supposed to be under 1 hour but takes almost 2. I walk holding both dogs collars to keep them from stumbling and falling and Rob walked in front of us in case we fall very slow and nerve wracking! We finally make the car and the dogs are very glad to lay down. On the way out we see a spke horn whitetail deer and his friends wisely bolt off (it was opening weekend of bow season) but this little yearling stood with his front feet up on a rock posing! Back at the cabin we all stumble in and rest! Later Rob & I go for another drive up moose alley and Rob sees a huge bull and then not much else did we do except call to check on the dogs and go to bed
Day 3:
6:30 am there s a gorgeous sunrise over the lake all pink and orange so we assume it will be a great day. Wrong! Robs goes fishing while I pack up as we have to check out at 11. The dogs are finally pottying ok, not great but ok. Rob gets back and wind is blowing and it is raining again.. We eat and check out and drive over to Indian Stream which is a paper company property that is hikable.
We drive 15 miles into the woods on logging roads and get out to do a flat hike on the logging road. We hike a total of 2 hours and get within 2 miles of the Canadian border. Stop for lunch at a log a bear has ripped up for ants. Dogs seem glad for a less strenuous hike and I am too as we are all very sore. After we start out again and stop at the bottom of the stream for Rob to fish while I walk the dogs on the snowmobile trail. We cross a bridge and sit in a sunny hayfield (rain has stopped for a bit) we get up and walk around a bt and then the cattle in the next field spot us from about 1/4 mile off. Dumb things start mooing and RUNNING towards the fence line and us. The dogs are growling at these creepy creatures and wanting at them! We walk back onto the bridge til the cows leave when they find out we won't feed them (all 50+ of them!) and then we set out on our trip home again. Not much else to report as we just stopped a couple more times for rob to fish and we got home at 9:30 pm. Unloaded the truck got the dogs in their pens and unwound from the drive before bed.
All and all even with the rain it WAS relaxing to be away from the kennel and phones!!
