Diagnostic Chart for Guppy Disease

Guppies are not as hardy as they once were. They are now more succeptable to disease and problems. The most common ailments to guppies now are columnaris, and problems due to gill and other parasites. These are treatable, if poperly diagnosed and treated in time. The list below should help you to identify the problem you may be having, and treat it.


Columnaris

Symptoms are a white cotton like fungus on the mouth, fins, or body.

Treatment= Furazone Green, Furazone Light, Tetracycline, or Erythromycin.


Clamp Fin and Fin and Tail Rot

Symptoms- Fins are clamped or tightly closed. Ragged look to end of fins and tail. Fins not erect.

Treatment= Erythromycin, Furazone Green, Tetracycline, or Triple Sulfa. Use salt with these treatments. 1 Tablespoon per 5 gallons water.


Gill Disease

Symptoms- Fish remain at surface of water with gills wide open gaspng for air.

Treatment- Jungle Internal Parasite Guard and Salt- 1 Tablespoon per 5 gallons. Or Tetracycline, Furazone Green or Kanamycin.


"Guppy Problems"

Symptoms- Off color patches, hovering on top, or swimming peculiarly.

Treatment- Ampicillin or TMT.


Ich

Symptoms- White salt like spots on fins and body. Fish may scratch on the glass.

Treatment- Ich Control.


New Fish

Symptoms- It is a good idea to treat new fish even if theydon't show any symptoms or problems. To prevent disease spread in stressed fish that have been moved or shipped.

Treatment= Furazone Green, Furazone Light, or Triple Sulfa. Salt may be used with these. 1 Tablespoon per five gallons.


Velvet

Symptoms- Hazy or white appearance on body. Scratching.

Treatment- Acraflavine, Methlene Blue, Ich Control, or Furazone Green.


About some of these Medications.

May of the above recommended medications will color your water, and can even stain your silicone tank caulking. Furazone Green, Furazone Light, Acraflavine, Methylene Blue, Ich Control will all definitely do this.
Tetracylcine, Erythromycin, and Triple Sulfa will not discolor your water. This doesn't mean that one or the other works better, but I have personally had more luck with Furazone Green than Tetracycline.
