Holiday Heat and Global Warming

One More Year Here

It has been almost a year now since I wrote this poem. Then I had been trying to escape the summer heat in my home that has no air conditioning. Another Labor Day holiday will be here soon. This time there is heat in more ways than last year, as the vice presidential candidates are getting ready to join the two competing front runners for president. It will soon be a time for a history-making election here in the United States. Regardless of political party loyalties, all of us here in the United States have become aware that gasoline prices have soared, and as a consequence, food prices and other costs have increased dramatically. Some of us are more able to cope with the increases than others of us are. Most of us are aware of the changes to the environment that are now occurring. I believe each of us is trying to do the best we can to create a better world for all of us and for our descendants. After I wrote the following poem, a new baby was born into my own extended family. Now my words "Remember the children who will inherit the land" have even more meaning for me than when I first wrote them. Perhaps there is some part of this poem which reaches you too, as I bring it out again this year.
