My Time

by Eve Adam, a.k.a. Harmonic Eve

Boxed in.
No place to go ---
Only where someone else
Chooses for me.
Why is my time
Wasted so?
I had plans.
I had hopes.
What's here for me now?
There is ONE hope,
One plan to pursue;
I'll fill my time with that.

Free at last!
There's so much to do!
No time for extras ---
Not even one which gave me solace
When I thought my time was being wasted.
The only comfort I was allowed
No longer fits my busy life.
The restriction I hated
Has proved a blessing.
Yes, I see now.
It was meant to be thus.
It was a time well spent.

Eve Adam, a.k.a. Harmonic Eve

From my email to Gai, my Australian pen pal, about this poem:

The first part of the poem reflects earlier feelings, not present-day feelings at all, on my part anyway. However, I am identifying with someone else's present situation. I am hoping the later part of the poem can point him in the direction of greater happiness than he is now experiencing. I found my own life unfolding this way, many years ago. I am not in a position to talk directly with him, but I hope that he will find the poem and absorb the true meaning.

I was thinking last night about how fortunate I was that I had time to do something I enjoyed even when I was mostly feeling quite restricted. So it was "a time well spent" after all, despite the basic feeling of being "boxed in" then. In the blank verse poem, there are nine lines of anguish, followed by three lines of reflection and change of direction, followed by nine more lines, this time, lines of freedom. However, the time of freedom is minus the ONE consolation that appeared during the time of anguish. That second set of nine lines is followed by three more lines of reflection. There is the realization that there was good mixed with the earlier not-so-good, and the first reflection and change of direction from hopelessness to making the best of the situation, was what made the conclusion possible, that it WAS a "time well spent" after all. Yes, DEEP!
