Harmonic Eve's #14 Afterglow Song: Quietly Burning Still

Words and music by Eve Adam, also known as Harmonic Eve and formerly known as Phyllis Eve Weiler

This music was copyrighted in 1961 as part of my piano suite. It is the 14th piece in "Afterglow: A Piano Suite With Optional Lyrics." I was a young stay-at-home mother when I composed the music and lyrics together. Like other pieces I have written, neither the words nor the music came first. Why, I don't know, but my music always seems to come at the same time as its lyrics if it is to have lyrics at all. Other times I have written poetry, but I have never set one of my poems to music. The creative process is a mystery even to me, and I have been very much involved with it. I do know that the reasoning part of my mind refines what the imaginative part of my mind just FEELS. My college psychology training makes me guess that the two hemispheres of my brain work well together. The music theory classes I took at college have given me a confidence I would not have had otherwise, but my music is far more than an intellectual following of a "recipe." (My cooking style uses my imagination too.) Not everyone's taste is the same, so enjoy what you like and disregard the compositions you don't like. I don't serve the same thing every time. The original manuscript has become quite yellow with age. The remedy for that as it relates to these images on the next pages, was to make photocopies as "light" and scan from those photocopies instead of from the manuscript directly. I first scanned and published the manuscript pages, but now I have substituted a scanning of the Xerox copies. The white background has now replaced the yellowed background, and copies you might make from your computer's printer should be much easier to read. Normal size paper and normal black ink will be sufficient for making your own copies.

This particular piece may be a little more difficult to play than others I have presented, partly because of the 5/4 time signature, and partly because of the rapid repetition of chords. It is, however, much easier to play than Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody #2. I used to love that one, but have you ever seen the sheet music for it? I purchased it as a teenager. I gave up before mastering it. Now I find beauty in simpler musical ideas, especially more than one voice at a time. I have been influenced by Bach and by my experiences singing in a choir, but I do believe some of Liszt has motivated me for this particular #14 from my suite.

In the manuscript of the suite as a whole, this song started on page 28 and ended on page 33. It is the very last song in the suite. The pages have been re-numbered as 1 through 9 for this stand-alone copy.

Each page should be printed as a whole to include the page number, composition title and composer name. Each page has its own URL to make printing easier. The background will not show on your printed copy.

Other sheet music sites I have made may be helpful in understanding this site, especially regarding the copyright and suggestions for printing. See the link below which leads to "Harmonic Eve Extras." There links will always be the most up-to-date, with a complete listing of ALL of my non-commercial, family-friendly web sites.

When first attempting to play this song, be aware that the time signature indicates five quarter notes per measure, and that some of those five quarter notes per measure are actually divided into triplets. This is music full of emotion! Let it sing, using the optional lyrics as a guide to interpretation.
