HAPPY HUNGARIANS

Vegasz! Bekak Ugralnuk!

If you can read and understand that you are on the right page. If you catch the errors and want to make corrections, this page may be frustrating for you.

This originally was meant for 2nd generation Hungarians - American born children of Hungarian parents. We learned the language as children but have forgotten much of it. A few years ago we had a local group that met once a month to practice. We were not very good, but we laughed a lot!

You can e-mail me, Barb, at hbtcu@webtv.net - I'll post your message on the page and we'll see what happens.

From: withloro@msn.com(Rosie Morse) , Sep 23, 2006, Subject: Looking for someone

My name is Rosemary!  Maiden name is Rosemary Tichy.  I am second generation Hungarian.  Born in Halifax Nova Scotia in 1957 when my parents fled from Hungary due to the turmoil of that time.  I speak the language (colorfully according to my cousin) since that is all that we ever spoken in the house as I grew up.  I never learned to read or write the language, but when I see the writing I can muttle through it very slowly.

All I have ever heard through out my childhood was how absolutely breath taking and beautiful Budapest is.  By the photos and food I've so fondly come to master in my cooking due to my mom and grandmother, I will agree whole heartedly. I don't really know where my heart lies more, Hungary or America.  My uncle always tells me over the phone from Hungary, don't forget that I am really a Hungarian. Don't forget your roots!!

It's a strange situation, feeling that I'm really from Hungary when I haven't even been to Europe yet.  I love everything about the culture and it's marvelous history.

My parents have a very unique fairytale history behind them as far as their relationship goes and their life in Hungary.  My father being a very proud and soft-spoken  person of extremely high intelligence was not one to boast about his past nor one to really share it. He was a man bigger than life itself, but so soft-spoken. He exuded strength from his quiet demeanor.  He passed away five years ago unfortunately at the age of 79.  Only after his passing did I find out that he was once previously married in Hungary and had one daughter.  The marriage ended I hear on not so friendly terms, so he was banned from ever coming in contact with his daughter ever again by the daughters mom's side of the family.  I don't know what age she would be now, but I'm guessing somewhere around perhaps in her late 50's or mid sixties.  Mom won't discuss it with me much, but I have this overwhelming desire to learn more about her.

Both mom and dad were both Budapest.  Dad was born I think what was called Romania back then, which was still part of Hungary.  I know this is a big shot in the dark, but stranger things have happened.  I guess what I'm asking for is that if someone recognizes his last name or can identify with this story, maybe they can email me with anything that they might know to help me find out about her.

Thank You.
Roszika
(my father used to call me his little rose)

8/8/06 - Maybe some of you can help Susan. I would think there would be tapes available to help learn the language - Maybe a travel agency could get one of the tourist guide books that has some of the basics, but you need a tape, or a real person, to learn to pronounce some of those long, long words like gyogyszererzekeny? Those can be real fun!

I came across your website when looking for possible classes in Richmond, Virginia that would teach the Hungarian language. We have friends (Americans) who live in Hungary, and I would love to learn to speak some Hungarian. Do you know of any classes in Richmond?

Susan

Here's another Floridian Hungarian:

I am so happy I have found this site!!!
Well, I am a Hungarian born Hungarian. 100% Magyar. My husband is Italian and we moved to the US 14 months ago. Our kids are going to be "fruitcake" LOL
I miss home sooooo bad!!! My heart breaks every time I see pics of Budapest. Don't misunderstand, I like it in the US (Why else would I be here???) but Budapest is truly the most amazing and beautiful place on the Earth, least for me!!! I encurage everybody to visit!!!
I visited the website of the Hungarian Association in Plant City, FL since that is really close to me. I was happy to find addresses of hungarian businesses and such in the area. I think that's a great idea!!! Barb, I'd love to be part of your Hungarian group!!! I adjusted preatty well to the American culture and lifestyle but sometimes I still feel lost here. And actually I am terrified of loosing my identity!!! I order all my books from Hungary and read in Hungarian all the time. I talk to my family and friends in Hungary every week. But it feels like I already have forgotten a lot!!! SCARY So I NEED more practice. And of course if we (ever???) will have kids, I want them to speak Hungarian fluent. Sorry for all the yepping LOL, but I'm overly happy to meet people with the same cultural background!!!

P.S: Plzzzzzzzz respond

My name is Edina, both of my parent are from Hungary and I was born in Budpest and lived there until I was about 9 years old. I learn to speak english after I moved here. I currently live in Pensacola, Fl where my mother moved about 8 years ago. I have been living here about 3-4 years. I would love to meet anybody that speaks hungarian here. I have only met one person who is a piano teacher at my daughters ( who is 5 1/2 years old) piano school who speaks some hungarian. I am trying to teach my daughter Hungarian because I belive that it would be really great for her and because my grandmother who lives in Hungary does not speak English too well. If there is anybody that speaks Hungarian or is from Hungary I would really like to meet them or speak with them. I have not spoken with anyone in Hungarian in about 3 years other them my grandmother about once every couple of months and  I would really like to. If you have any questions or would like to get in contact with me please let me know. My email address is eoncls@cox.net.

Hi Everyone!
I am a Hungarian (and proud to be), living at the moment in Budapest. (30 year old, mother of two beautifull girls (2 and a half yrs and 4 months old)).
I believe Hunagarian is a beautifull language, but extremly difficult to learn for non natives. Because of my work I met many Americans, Canadians living temporary here in Budapest and I really appreciate when someone wants to learn about our culture, language.
In case you need any translation, songs, poems etc. I am more than happy to help.
For some practice we can talk on skype or other means.
Feel free to contact, since I am mostly at home with the girls on borkamoca_anyoca@yahoo.com
P.S:My elder daughter takes English classes. You should listen how she sais: I love you!

9/24/04 - Thanks to Zoli for the following information. I should have known there would have to be a Z in there somewhere! I got was susrprised at his reference to ' lard bread'. I asked about that on here a long time ago and didn't get much response. When we were kids and relatives or other Hungarians visited we would have a cookout where my dad made a fire out in the yard. My mom sliced raw onions onto homemade bread. She cut a slab of bacon into chunks and they would roast the bacon on a stick, dripping the grease on the bread. When all the grease had melted they put the crisp bacon on top of the onions. added another slice of bread to make a sandwich, and considered it a real treat! Does anyone do that anymore?

hello from detroit

I think I can help you with the name bewshi. Actually it is spelled BOZSI with the O having 2 little dots on top of it, kind of like we spell koszonom for thank you. All those O's have 2 dots on them too.I don't have a magyarul vrajtolo keyboard. If I did I could write it, anyway I guess bewshi would be the closest way you could spell it in english to make it sound like the magyar version. It does mean Betty though.   Try saying zsolt or zsiros kenyer(lard bread). Same concept. Funny thing is I've got a buddy here called Zsolt, and the locals call him Jolt. I get to be called some good ones too - Zoe, Zowee, Stoli, Zoltran - you Zoli's out there know what i'm talking about!:-)

I'm planning on moving to the Ft.Lauderdale area in the near future. Drop me an e-mail if you want

Aug 30 - I have a question for anyone who wants to answer. My oldest sister's name was Elizabeth. We called her Liz, but when my parents were living they called her what sounded like Bewshi. I'm sure my spelling is wrong. Her husband, a non-Hungarian put an "r" sound in that and called her Bershi. Another of her descendents asked me what it meant and how to spell it. I guessed it meant Betty . Am I anywhere near right?

Barb

I think the following letter from Zoli has many possibilities for reactions from all of us, regardless if we are lst or 2nd generation Hungarians. He's identified a new language. We should name it. I and my sisters and brothers have used it for years but I've never seen it in writing before.

From: berces@wyan.org(berces) Jul 28, 2004

hi guys! I moved to detroit from budapest in 87
didn't speak any english at that time so naturally went to work in a hungarian restaurant. Many
of our customers are 2nd generation hungarians and it's nice to see and hear them practice the language , Here are a few words or sentences that 2nd generation hungarians use, sometimes
integrating english and hungarian words thinking it's all hungarian - biggest word is BOXI (doboz) meaning box
Kexi mistaken for dessert or cake
Lekvar mistaken for prune butter                 Kare (car) - auto, kocsi
I hear a lot of these sentences:
Ma reggel beultunk a careba es elhajtottunk a
churchbe.
Holnap megyek a hospitalba egy csekapra.     Adjal a heten egy telefontes elmegyunk a bareba .

I'm not trying to make fun of anyone just figured i'll share this with you .

Hi
I'm fortunate to live in one of  numerous cities where it's rather easy to find Hungarians, However some places as in Florida it's is quite tough. I suggest you contact websites in large cities and from there people can direct you to their friends and family etc...
Here are a few sites with which to begin, I hope they're useful to you.                  Perry

chicagohungarians.com
sfkornyek.szabadsagharcos.org
wesselenyi.com
hungarian americans on the net

4/5/04 - The following is not only a tongue twister but also a mind boggler.

From: chrislawal@yahoo.com (Kristina Bennett)
Do you know what "nyaktekereszetimellfekvenc" is???? (nyak-tkereszeti-mell-fekvenc)English word for it: TIE

2/11/04 - I think Susie is only the 2nd person to correct my Bekak statement. I've left it in my Americanized version of Hungarian to show that this is more about fun than accuracy. Actually, there are more frogs out of sight, so you also have to use imagination a little to figure out the message and justify the mistakes. But feel free to keep the comments coming!

From: Zsuzsi_V@comcast.net () Date: Wed, Feb 11, 2004

You have this written on the top of your web site and it's written incorrectly in Hungarian:
Vegasz! Bekak Ugralnuk!
The correct way to write it is:

Vigyáz !  Béka Ugrál !  (one frog)

Vigyáz !  Békák Ugálnak  (more then one frog)

Have a nice day, Susie

HI Barb, the two last letters of the Hungarian ABC are Z and ZS . "Z" in word (viz-szintes) comes first because "zs" (vizs-ga ) is the last letter of the ABC.  Expl.  zs , ny, ty , ly, are double letters, but pronounced as  one letter in Hungarian. That made you confused  !? --probably-- Keep having fun and feel free to have more A. Best wishes, Nunukke

2/4/04 - I have a question. I was looking up "vizsga" in my dictionary and couldn't find it. Then I found it but it was in what I think is the wrong place. Words like vizszintes were ahead of it. I thought sg would come before sz in any language. Is there a reason for this?? - Barb
