Thank You SOOOOOOOOOO Much ! ! !
Up Date of desperate needs. We have to put another septic tank in for the business side of the property. I've called every place I have a phone
number
for and they all want at least $ 5,000.00 up front to start with. They won't
let us make payments. Loans are out of the question also because we don't make enough money. I don't know how long they will give us to get one put
in
before they shut us down, I supose it will have to be done by the time the weather is warm enough. We have a septic on the home site side but they
want us to have a seperate one on the NIHO/Shop ( business ) side also. Smoky was hoping to start OJT for the kids in an accredited class for auto repair this
year but we just didn't have the money to build a big shop, we have the material we took down at the old sheep ranch. The footings and leveling of the ground is what the hold up is for that. Smoky has been trying to level the ground with an old tractor but it didn't work very well. This summer some collage kids are coming from Cailf. to help us build if we can get enough money togather to level the groung and put in footings, BUT now this thing came up about the septic so I guess we might be up a creek with out a paddle, unless we can get some sort of help somewhere. Even if
we
could get a loan that we'd only have to make small payments would help. Thanks ! Pokey

Our BIO.
Ok Alorha, Here's our Bio. you asked for.
Smoky was born in K.C., MO. Went to collage in K.C. Was in the service in Spokane Wash. served 6 yrs. as a jet engine machanic. We met in Spokane we was married in K.C., Mo. Dec. 20 1976. We are still on our honeymoon.
I was born in the Pine Ridge Hospital. Mom brought me home to Rosebud shortly after that. I went to Indian boarding schools here in S.D. I went to nursing school in Cheyenne Wyo.
When Smoky got out of the service we moved to K.C., Mo. lived there for about
19 yrs. We came to a Valandra reunion about 5yrs. ago. On the way back to K.C. I made the coment " Gee I hate to go back to K.C." " Smoky said "Well would you like to move back here ? " I said " Your kidding There's nothing here and life is realy hard. " He said " NO I'M NOT KIDDING " So here we are.
We have a little auto repair shop. Smoky wants to have OJT for the people in an accredited auto repair class. And we have Native Indian Heritage Organization, a non-profit charity org.
Smoky is in a country band, he plays a 6 string Bass, I run the sound board for them. The money we make from the shop and the band not only helps us pay bills it keeps NIHO going, it's slim pickins most of the time but we are doing what we can.
Wayne and Annette was born in Spokane Wash. and went to school there. Neither one of them made it to Collage. Wayne went to trade school for Trucking auto repair. Was married about 3 yrs. and has a little girl and a younger son.
Annette has 5 children and drives school bus here in Rosebud.
Nanners was adopted and lived in K.C. until she met us and she moved up here with us. She went to school and collage in K.C. She's taking business classes and will be taking a class for writing grants, at the collage in Mission.
Annette, Nanners and Wayne have been a real blessing to us. They all work real hard keeping N.I.H.O., Smoky and me in good working condition.
My cousin Alorha in Calif. does a vrey good job taking care of our N.I.H.O. Web site.
That's about all I can think of for now. Love Ya's ! Smoky and Pokey

Make a small biography about you and Smokey. It will be like getting to know N.I.H.O.'s founders/staff. ;o)
Here's what all we plan to do here once we get the buildings built. We already have a double wide for the free store (to small already ) It's been going sence 2001.
Smoky wants to have OJT for the people in an accredited auto repair class. There isn't any auto repair shops here to give these people a chance for on hands training. You have to work in a Certified auto repair shop for 2 years before you can be Certified yourself. We are the only shop around here thats Certified.
Off the Rez. no one will even give them a chance to see if they can do auto repair they just look at them and see they are Indian so they won't even take an app. from them, they always come up with some kind of off the wall excuse.
We want a safe place where abused Elders, burn out victums and people here with loved ones in the hosp. are staying in their vehicles and eating where ever and when ever they can, can come and stay with us until the crissis is over.
That's what the bedrooms are for and they will also have use of the kitchens, laundry, bath and showers.
The other rooms is for the Elders to come and be with other people, do arts and crafts or just visit if that's what they want to do. Room for the young people to make their regaila practice their dances, do other arts and crafts.
We want to teach crafts, cooking, cannning, sewing, quilting, gardening, beading, wood and leather tooling, rock tumbling, cutting, polishing, and making jewelry etc. Ceramics. For the kitchen we already have 6 stoves, 2 comerical size up right freezers, 1 chest freezer the biggest Wards ever made plus 2 smaller ones. We have all kinds of cooking pots, pans, canning pressure cookers etc. For the sewing we have 13 sewing machines, a baby lock, and a blind stich machine, cutting tables, sewing tables, for quilting we only have one quilting rack but at least that's a start. etc. For gardening we have an old tractor, a tiller, rakes, hoes etc.
We have a rock tumbler and a band saw. Beading we have a few looms and we can make more. For the leather we have tools and stamps. For the wood we have some carving knives. For ceramics we have 4 kilns, pouring tables, work tables. We also want to have an excersize room we have a tred mill, stationary bike, rowing bench, step ups, another excersize maching that works the full body.
Teach them how to count money and to market their goods and get a fair price for what they are selling. Right now most of them don't know how to do any of this. They make beautiful things and take them to the trading post and only get about 25 to 50 cents and the trading post sells it for 10 to 100 times what they paid for it. I'm thinking of having a little store off the free store for them to make and sell what they make and they will set their price and that's what they will get when they sell it. We will teach them how to figure their costs, time put into it and how to figure a fair price.
I don't know if I told you what the free store is. The free store gets donations and it's given to who ever needs it at no cost. We have clothes, shoes, coats, purses, some bedding, kitchen stuff etc. Mostly stuff Nim, Ed from Sterling Ks. and some from Vigi and her group from Justin Tx. plus we get donations from all over the country just not in such a big volume. Christmas is usually the big donation time from all over the country mostly Christmas stockings and stocking stuffers. Our son dresses up like Santa and I'm Mrs. Santa and everyone else is elfs. Smoky is the tallest Elf I've ever seen 6'2".
When we was in K.C., Mo. We also had NIHO and we did all these things so we know it will work when we get a place built to do all this. When we moved up here we brought everything with us. That's why we have so much to do with.
Well I guess your starting to get eye strain by now so I'll cut this short for now. Love In Friendship ! THANK YOU ALL SOOOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP! ! !

PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY!
Urgent Needs of Cheyenne Children
The Northern Cheyenne Tribal School in Busby, Montana receives the most impoverished, the most disadvantaged, and the most "at risk
kids that even other schools on the reservation won't admit. Many of these children have no guardians what-so-ever. For those who've never been there, let me tell you, Montana gets COLD during the winter time. Yet, some of these kids don't have coats, or warm clothing such as sweaters, long under-ware, etc. Mr. Elkshoulder himself has spent money out of his own pocket to buy shoes for children who would otherwise go without.
This school is located quite far from the main hub of the reservation, out in the districts, so they receive very little funding.
Please help in whatever way you can. I will be more than happy to organize a clothing drive for those interested. If you can send money, no amount is too small. If you are feeling the effects of these hard times and unable to donate, please distribute this statement as widely as you can. Any monetary donations should be sent to: Northern Cheyenne Tribal School

Greetings friends of Big Mountain and surrounding Dineh communities of Black Mesa,
As the New Year begins there are new and rather startling developments taking place on Black Mesa. That said, let us honor all the hard work that grass roots organizations have done in contributing to the Mojave Generating Station shutting down, the protection of the N-Aquifer and the closure of the Black Mesa mine.
# Black Mesa Mine closes & the relocation office disbands. Victory? Not according to many families of the Big Mountain communities. THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES.
RIGHT NOW there is an amendment on the congressional floor that sets a new timetable for the forced relocation of a number of Navajo families on Black Mesa. This bill, S1003, comes at a time when the world's largest coal company, Peabody Coal, prepares not only to continue, but in fact to expand its strip mining of American Indian lands. The company plans on drawing down yet another high-quality residential aquifer in the process. However, something stands in Peabody's way: Indigenous people live on the land above where the water and billions of tons of low-sulfur coal lie. As with their ancestors many generations back, these people live on the land that is the base for their tradition, their spirituality, their water and their livelihood. http://blackmesais.org/struggle_continues05.htm
# Struggles Continue Despite Black Mesa Mine Shut Down By Bahe Y. Katenay Yes! Finally, we can all breathe a little easier the cleaner air, but it's only temporary. The environmentalist and local Indigenous activists' point of view may not see the whole picture. No, not in terms of keeping the Black Mesa Mine operating and letting it suck-out all the ancient pristine aquifer. But in terms of the human and economic cost that the local indigenous mine workers and their families are going to face. http://blackmesais.org/struggles_continue1105.htm
# Stay with a family on Black Mesa. Come as an organized work crew over a few days or weekend, or stay for a few weeks to longer. Honor these traditional elders by volunteering to give them comfort and peace by herding
sheep, by organizing work crews to go to home sites, and/or by providing other essential but appropriate skills such as holistic therapy and renewable energy technologies. There's a Cultural Sensitivity Packet at http://www.blackmesais.org for new to Dineh culture and for tips on what to bring.
# This spring a caravan will be traveling to Black Mesa from Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area. Carpenters, gardeners, permaculture practioners, mechanics, body-workers, sheepherders, anyone willing to put in a hand, join the caravan! Contact BMIS for details. blackmesais@riseup.net
