Here is Tony Stark, IRON MAN. This custom figure is made in his Modular Armor and is just how he looks in the first season of the 1996 Iron Man cartoon. Iron Man was made from a Marvel Gold Black Panther's body and a 1996 Toy Biz Iron Man head. The shoulder pieces were sculpted by using 5-minute liquid epoxy and then filed with thin metal files to exactly match the way they look in the series. The chestbeam was cut out of the vac-metal attachments that came with the 1996 Toy Biz Iron Man figure. A slot was carved into the figures chest area and the chestbeam was then embedded deep into the chest of the figure, just a little higher than chest-levei. It was krazy glued in place. The yellow modules were "harvested" from three 1996 Iron Man figures and cut out the their legs in the same spot on each figure so they would all be the same size and shape. These six modules, which are all the same size were then embedded into the arms and legs of this custom and krazy glued in place. All of the red armor was built up all around these added on pieces to just the right level with liquid epoxy and filed round and smooth with metal files. All the deep musculature of the chest, back, arms and legs were all leveled into armor using the epoxy. The knee pads were cut from the vac-metal attachments and krazy glued in place. The belt buckle was made by using a combination of carving and epoxy. The shape of the buckle was made with epoxy, but the yellow center was carved into the figure itself. The sides of the belt were carved on the bottom and liquid epoxy on top. This changed the straight Panther's belt to the angular Iron Man's belt.
This is a side view of Iron Man. You can see the Repulsor Ray in this shot. It was made from a round piece of plastic from the ML Ghost Rider's bike and krazy glued in the center of his palm. The inside of the repulsor was painted the grey color it was drawn in the series. His fingertips were rounded from the Panther's claws into a normal hand. You can see the yellow modules are all identical in size and all of them have only 3 raised "III" sections. The earcoverings were made out of liquid epoxy and the grooves were cut into them just like he was drawn. The yellow paint was Testors enamel and was mixed to match the Toy Biz paint apps. The armor red was Testor's Red Metallic enamel and was identical to the Toy Biz paint apps. The eye and mouth slots were painted in Testors flat red for contrast. Iron Man was originally left with a glossy finish as I thought armor should look glossy. Then I decided that a custom should look like it was made of plastic, not paint. The figure has been sealed with a mixture of Testor's liquid dullcote and liquid glosscote. This mixture gives the paint apps a semi-gloss finish, just like a Toy Biz figure has right out of the bubble. The figure looks like it was "molded" in these colors now.
Here is a shot of Iron Man from the back. You can see how on-model he is 360º The "V" shape of his red armor was formed with the liquid epoxy and his entire back was leveled from deep musculature to smooth armor. The musculature in the yellow section of his back was resculpted from the "heavy" look the Panther had into this sleeker look. His legs and even his butt were built up and leveled into the proper armor look. The only musculature Iron Man has in this armor is in the yellow sections. In this shot you can better see the imbeded yellow modules and the armor built up and smoothed all around them. A little harder than gluing vac-metal on top of a figure.
The Modular Armor, Model XII, Mark I is the 1994 Model Iron Man. When it was built it was the most sophisticated model to date and probably remains the most versatile armor Stark ever created. While inventor extraordinaire Tony Stark had taken the concept of powerful armor as far as it could go, with the Modular Armor he rethought the basic design paradigm. Instead of a single, integrated suit, Model XII's design is based on a modular component system. The armor's capabilities can be reconfigured by swapping out sub-systems like the boots, gloves or helmets with plug-in points for auxillary systems chosen according to specific mission needs. The Model XII remains the sleekest and most streamlined armor Stark has ever designed, most likely because the suit depends on the interchangeable modules and as a result it is not overstuffed. The chosen color scheme is also a departure. While still red and yellow, the suit is mostly red: Red shoulder pieces, gauntlets and legs with yellow forearms and midriff/back produce an armor look unlike any we've ever seen. Other design changes include the first liftible faceplate, an inverted pentagon-shaped chestbeam, and a prominent belt buckle.
The special feature on this suit: The Modules themselves. Utilizing both snap-on devices and compact inserts, Iron Man can reconfigure his armor as the mission dictates. A Railgun or Scanalyzer can be popped onto waiting gauntlet ports while a half dozen or more yellow, compact utility modules can be snapped onto the outer leg/arm portions of the armor. They can also be slipped into compartments within the armor. Larger Modules include: Full Spectrum Scanalyzer capable of firing an adamantium tipped rocket probe, Magnetic Railgun Launcher (capable of firing explosive rounds as well as an Energy Dampening Semi-Fluid Polymer Compound that bonds in seconds and drinks up energy like a sponge), Magnogravetic Field Generator pack that cancels the gravity of whatever object it is attached to, LEM Field Generator, a Cryogenic Compact Module that unleashes a liquid nitrogen blast. Image Inducers, packs slipped into wrist and shin compartments, modify the holo-generator to create both illusionary projections and tactile feedback through tensor fields; Allowing Iron Man to look and/or feel like anyone. The device can also give off transceiver signals. An improved refractory coating can absorb almost an entire optic blast from Ultimo, while Electro-Magnetic Attention circuits in the skin allow Iron Man to pull things to his armor. Palm and sole magnets allow him to become a wall-crawler at will.
