About the Station

KPFZ was one of the first LPFM (low-power fm) stations to be licensed under the new FCC ruling.

The low-power station went on the air September 1, 2001, ten days before 9-11.

KPFZ was off the air for three years while making the transition from a low-power station, based in Lucerne, to a full-power station, studio in Lakeport.

KPFZ is the first full-power community FM-radio station to be licensed in the last ten years... anywhere in the country!

KPFZ is an all-volunteer station. The programmers are all volunteers. Everything that gets done for the station, is done by volunteers. No one gets paid. This is where "we do radio for love, not for money!"

About the Programs

As of November 7, 2009, there are fifty-three different, locally produced programs. Twenty-nine talk shows and twenty-four music-format shows. Most have one live broadcast and one replay weekly. All the programmers are local volunteers, dedicated to quality programming. They present a wide variety of topics and musical genre. There is something for every interest and point of view.

In addition, there are three syndicated (imported) programs that air only once a week, each, and one that's on five nights a week. These are Tower of Faith, an African-American church service from Oakland, CA, co-produced by Tee Watts, FolkScene with Roz Larman, music and interviews, from So. California, New Dimensions with Justine Willistom, from Ukiah, and Democracy Now, "the war and peace report" with Amy Goodman, every week night's evening news program.

Talk Shows
Most are one hour long, exceptions are Steve and Catherine's Lake County News Magazine and their Voices of Lake County which are two hours each. Word Weavers has three unique talk shows a month (four if there is a fifth Saturday that month). Karma Cola, counted only once, has new programs six nights a week. Tune in to hear old-time radio drama, a church service, current events, political viewpoints, local news and events, culinary art, mysteries of the spirit, legal issues, philosophy, psychology, christian perspectives, secular perspectives, science, drama, poetry and literature, holistic healing, cowboy poetry, political rants, national and international news, book reviews, economy, ecology, bird notes, marriage/ family counselling, shop talk (cars, trucks, motorcycles), senior moments, tribal voices, LGBT community issues, native american issues, business issues, or buy, sell and barter on the old okies' trading post. [The station counts Old Okie as a talk show, I include it with the music programs.] Most programmers welcome their listeners to call in and participate.

Music Shows
Most of these are two hours long, exceptions being Jane Schadeck's Blue Skies, one hour, and Rhyschenda's Music of the Night, four hours. Tim's Easy Rollin' shows are from the vault. One of the Word Weavers segments is cowboy music. Other music-program styles include gospel, classical, some opera, Celtic, reggae, jazz, alternative, country roots, new country, eclectic, blues, folk, electronic/ techno, oldies, hard rock, new releases, local groups, bluegrass, esoteric, world music, light rock, and classic rock.

Chloe Karl's November 21, 2008 Earth Wise program was about how and when this radio station began. Current and former programmers were in the studio and calling in to reminisce. To own this hour-long program about the early-days history of KPFZ, contact the station for a copy of this show on CD.

Copies of many of the programs can be purchased in CD format from the station, ($5.00 for a one-hour show, $10.00 for a two-hour program). Note the name of the program, the name of the programmer, and the date of broadcast. For more information, call (707)-263-3640 during regular business hours or leave a message at any time. Someone will get back to you.

This is an excellent way to help power up the station and buy an inexpensive souvenir for yourself. Two treats in one.

Debbie suggested calling in to the talk shows to voice your opinion, then ordering CD copies of that program to send to the kids and grandkids. See kids, here I am on the radio.

Click here to see examples of past shows. This is commercial-free free-speech radio. The content is diverse - something for everyone... except maybe Adrian and his pal Clint F.

Saturday Salon with Steve and Catherine Elias was originally called Both Sides Now and then Both Sides Now - One Side at a Time.

The Classical Music Show was sometimes hosted by Kaiser Soza. Kaiser Soza was the name of a mysterious character in the 1995 Kevin Kline movie, "The Usual Suspects".

Senior Moments, hosted by Frank Perry and Bev Bergstrom, was on the air in the early days of the low-power station. It returned, with gusto, when KPFZ became a full-power station April 2008. The last show was in September. The listening audience was not made aware that Frank was gravely ill and no longer able to do the show.

Frank Perry, born February 18, 1936, passed away November 9, 2008. During the 1970's he was a teacher at Upper Lake High School and his funeral was well attended by many of his former pupils, November 15, 2008.

Frank Perry was active in Lake County's Annual Passion Play (the 2nd weekend in May). He played the roles of Herod Antipas and the Jewish high priest Caiaphas in different productions of the play.

Theme Songs

"As Time Goes By" was the theme song for Senior Moments.

The Old Okie Workshop w/ Ken & Debbie Poole begins their hour with "In Spite of Ourselves" by John Prine and Iris Dement, the funniest of all.

My second-best favorite fun theme song is Herb Gura's "I'm Not a Lawyer but I Play One on the Radio" for his Law Show.

Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" is the theme song for Shop Talk with Forrest Garret and Raul Soldano.

Pink Floyd's "Money" is the theme for Taira St. John's It's Your Business program.

Jane Schadeck's Blue Skies opens with a different version of "Blue Skies" each week - same song by a different artist.

Raschenda opens her Music of the Night program with different versions of the Andrew Lloyd Webber song of the same name.

Lake County News Magazine with Steve and Catherine Elias begins with a nice instrumental version of "I Can't Stand the Rain" by Booker T. and the MGs.

Linda Guebert's Denim Alley is introduced with Casper Rawl's "Buckaroo" from the album Happy Birthday, Buck on the Texas Music label

Karl Shaul's Jus' Folk begins with Steve Earl's catchy tune, "Satellite Radio."

Saturday Salon with Steven and Catherine Elias begins and ends with Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On?"

Susan Krones starts up her Celtic Collage show with "Dulaman" by the Irish group Altan.

Intro music for Tim Hoff's Easy Rollin' is "Easy Rollin'" by the Rascals. His exit music, when he chooses to play it, is the theme from the old "Little Rascals" films.

Tim Hoff's intro music for Eclectic Echoes is "Baja" by the Astronauts.

Fresh Energy Hour with Dan "the Solar Man" was introduced with "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles.

Swan Songs

Poof! Twelve shows have disappeared since mid-October, 2008 [two returned in January]. If you think you may have a good idea for a new show, there's no time better than now to push it. Be brave and inventive. Turn your hobby into a radio show. Take the first step and contact Andy at the station, then stick with it.

Shop Talk with Forrest Garrett and Raul Saldono, master mechanic left Dec. 15, 2009. We need another car show!
