( ) -WPIAL Championship Meet Placement * * -PIAA Championship Meet Placement 5/31/04 (5:35 pm) All results from the PIAA championships are now included in the final honor roll and the All-Time WPIAL Top 25. If you have marks from previous meets that would alter the final lists, please forward them to me. Overall, in AA, the WPIAL fared pretty well at the PIAA Championships in Shippensburg. Four gold, three silver and five bronze medals were won by local girls. By far, Quaker Valley senior Jasmine Rogers had the best championship meet among all WPIAL female athletes. She won the 100 hurdles in a state record time of 14.37, then came back in less than ten minutes to capture the gold medal in the 100 meter dash. Jasmine, who is heading to Manhattan College to play volleyball and run track, also anchored the Quakers' 400 meter relay team to a silver medal finish. Quaker Valley, whose 3200 meter relay team won a bronze medal with a fine time of 9:32.73, ended up the highest placing WPIAL school at the meet with their third place finish. Freeport junior Lacey Cochran also had an outstanding meet. She easily won the 400 meter gold medal by seven tenths of a second. Her time of 56.99 moves her into 10th place on the All-Time WPIAL list. Lacey also won a silver medal in the 200 meter dash for the second year in a row. Also winning a gold medal for the WPIAL was Riverside senior Nicole Pitchford in the pole vault. Nicole, a PIAA-runnerup last year, won the title this year with a vault of 10-6. Winning a silver medal this year was Center sophomore Lindsay Dolan. She ran a 15.01 in the 100 hurdles to finish second to QV's Jasmine Rogers. Four WPIAL AA girls earned individual PIAA bronze medals. Junior Angela Harris of Farrell placed third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.63. Angela also won a PIAA medal by running a leg on the Steelers' 7th place 400 meter relay team. Bentworth freshman Alexzandra Loos showed the state that she will be a force to be reckoned with in the distance races as she placed third in the 1600 and fifth in the 800. What was very impressive was the quality of Alex's times in all four of her races (5:09.72, 5:08.11 & 2:17.78, 2:18.92). In the high jump, Greensburg Central Catholic sophomore Lauren Donahoe cleared a career best height of 5-5 to capture the bronze medal in that event while Waynesburg junior Randi Patton also cleared a career best height of 10-0 to earn a bronze medal in the pole vault. 8/12/04--Editor's Note. It is with deep sorrow that I report that Alexzandra Loos, the Bentworth High School freshman who won the 2004 WPIAL 1600 Meter championship in meet record time, passed away today from injuries suffered after being struck by an automobile yesterday. Alex, also a straight-A student, ended the 2004 WPIAL AA track season with the fastest times in both the 800 (2:17.78) and 1600 (5:08.11) as she captured PIAA medals in both events at Shippensburg. Needless to say, Alex made quite an impression during her first year of competition. Unfortunately, we will be denied the opportunity to watch Alex realize her full potential, both as a person and an athlete. I'm sure everyone joins me in expressing our condolences to Alex's family and her teammates. jfaiella@webtv.net (To submit times & marks) http://community.webtv.net/jfaiella (Home page) |
